How the hell did a game with graphics this ugly and lifeless become so popular? Minecraft sucks and is a pointless game to sandbox in when looking outside the window to my left I have a game with far more interesting visuals to it, not to mention the smell of fresh air.

Maybe I'm just playing it wrong by not using a CRT, OLED, or Mini LED display or something as opposed to a run of the mill workstation IPS panel. The sky and grass in particular along with everything else just feels so dull and lifeless, and I heard that those types of displays can really bring out the blueness of the sky.

Or maybe it's because the game did in fact mask its graphical limitations better with the original textures. Am I just having a nervous breakdown?

Wait until you realize Notch hastily copied Zachtronics' Infiniminer.

ok go build a mud hut in the garden i guess lol

Sandbox was super popular at the time and Minecraft is a very well rounded sandbox. You just don't realize how it felt because you are now way past that time. It is like how many don't realize that Super Mario Bros was open world for its time and felt liberating compared to most games. Also, its graphics are more simplistic than bad. They also happened to look a lot better than many PC indie games at the time though, as many were inconsistent and a bit ugly.
>>
>>737436205
isn't infiniminer a barebones non-game?
>>
>>737436130
Also, the audio engine sucks when you think about it. The annoying machines you could build were probably a symptom of that, but this game is seriously behind in a lot of technologies even compared to 1990's games, though I guess it emulated them well given you could run them on machines and operating system from the era. Same outdated rendering engine.

Seriously, the audio is about as primitive as it gets. No DSP effects, no EAX, no ambient soundscapes, nothing to give it some life or dynamism. It's completely empty and devoid of life much like the world its self, but at least earlier versions managed to somewhat obfuscate this to a degree as the aesthetic played with these limitations.

So was Minecraft for about 3 years

there's more to videogames than just graphics. maybe movies are more your speed?
>>
>>737436130
colors in minecraft really need to be touched up. maybe their vibrant visuals will fix this but i cant play this without shaders.

It comes down to the fact that it was a pure sandbox. There weren't too many games that allowed you to do anything or mod the game how you like. Also people knew the visuals were garbage and installed texture packs and when shaders became available people started to use that.
>>737436205
The creator of Infiniminer himself stated that Minecraft isn't a copy of his game.

So instead of going out and playing that amazing game, you spend time on a vietnamese basket weaving forum to seethe about video game?
Damn, must be a shit fucking game then

4chan made it popular. Notch used to come on /v/, that's why we had a splash screen since Beta.

woo, Reddit was added in Beta 1.0

Weirdly enough, Something awful is still in there.

removing the symptons but leaving the root of the problem
not like splashes are important but this little detail reflects perfectly how mojang operates nowadays
