I was as kid when RE4 came out. Can't remember exactly how old but probably around 12. I really liked RE1 which I had played the Gamecube remake of recently so I got it. I didn't understand why it was a completely different fucking genre of game. The first one was moderately paced, atmospheric, intriguing, full of puzzles and horror, set inside a cool ass mansion with zombies. It was visually beautiful with intricately crafted backgrounds and moody lighting. When I got RE4 I got an action shoulder shooter. That's it, you walk around, shoot some farmers with pitchforks, walk around some more, shoot some more farmers. That was all I experienced, no more horror, just action. The graphics were dog shit, with a color palette consisting entirely of brown, grey and green, and fuck all in the way of detail and lighting on account of moving to full 3D. I don't think I got even half way before dropping it out of boredom and to this day I don't understand why it's the most talked about instalment of the franchise. I guess people just really like their repetitive skill mastery action games.
