Lore is great and interesting, world/map is very large and immersive at the same time. It also has ton of mysteries. It has Cool bosses and the fighting style can be quite epic and cinematic. That's why it blew up so hard. I thought it was a great game, but having played all of the souls games many times beforehand, it wasn't anything groundbreaking, and I disliked a lot of the open world aspects. But I remember how amazed and engrossed I was when playing Dark Souls for the first time, it was an unforgettable experience and back then it was unlike anything I'd ever played. Interwoven with this goodwill was the hype that GRR Martin, perhaps the most famous fantasy writer of the 21st century, would be taking an active hand in the writing and worldbuilding of the series, alongside Mizayaki -- who was also fairly famous for his worldbuilding and lore.Combining these factors led to a perfect storm: Fromsoft fans would buy the game because they loved Dark Souls, action fans would buy the game because Fromsoft had become famous for their combat systems, and ASOIAF fans, fantasy fans, and storyfags would buy the game because of GRR Martin.Frankly, the ONLY game that could have the level of hype that Elden Ring had would be a hypothetical Elder Scrolls VI. But it'd have to PERFECT. Like, the lore would have to be 10/10, the graphics would have to be mind-blowing, the first person animations would have to be on par with Cyberpunk 2077, the music would have to be iconic, and the world would have to be immersive and fun as fuck to explore. If TES6 could pull all of this off, then I could see it dethroning Elden Ring as THE game.
