>>737442596Everyone banished to Lordran is undead, which means they don't die in the normal sense. The undead slowly "go hollow" and eventually become like the completely static corpses that you see lying around in the game with lootable items. To go hollow means to lose all of one's humanity. It's implied that some of the NPC's are surviving by stealing the humanity of other NPC's. Otherwise it's not clear how the undead are essentially immortal and tied to the bonfires.
