Serious answer, Sonic had too many trip ups over hurdles, some even causing some long-term damage while Mario kept the ball rolling for decades. Sure, who you like more is subjective but no one can deny that Mario has been in a way better spot, especially given the fact that Sega had often had thoughts of putting the blue rat down a few times

To be fair said nobodies also got burnt by Sega because they did a lot of stupid shit either behind their back (Denuvo suddenly appearing) or right in front of them (The absolute state of Sonic Origins).

It was one thing when Sonic Adventure wasn't quite there. That was their first try. After 25 years, they really ought to have figured it out.
Some guys playing around in the Doom engine literally figured it out before they did.

Literally none of what I specified is in those games.
You can't even select Tails, and play the same basic level, but with the added ability of flight, which is a pretty basic tenant of the early Sonic games.

Yeah none of them match all those exact things you listed, but that doesn't make them worse than Sonic 2 or 3. Collecting the emeralds was always the worst part of every sonic game that had it. Some of the games I listed do have multiple routes in their levels though they're not semi open like Robo Blast is I guess. Sonic Generations has two types of character even though they're technically the same guy, but I don't really care about that either way. For things like controls, level design and sense of speed they do it well enough I don't really care about those other parts

Generations is fine, as it stands, but it still only has like three boss fights, and they're all pretty mediocre. Plus, you can't play as Tails, you can't play as Knuckles...
I also hard disagree on emerald hunting. it was an extra challenge that always made you feel like a boss when you finally got all seven of them
I think giving characters their own stages is also entirely beside the design mentality of the earlier games. It's meant to be more like a fighting game. You pick the character that fits your play style, or you pick something strange to challenge yourself or have a different experience. The stages are supposed to stay the same, with the added bonus of maybe being able to reach a different path if you use someone's special ability.
