Yeah these private servers are made by blizzard anyways, they collect the profits. But the main product has to be free to compete with amateur servers. So they do this loop all the time, this is like the 10th popular private server they’ve closed. 1. Amass a huge playerbase 2. Let the server run for like a year 3. Sell lots of RMT 4. Fake lawsuit, close the server 5. Sell tons of new wow subs 6. Repeat It works because of lots of reasons. Everyone wants to play fresh because not having the gear to compete is extremely boring. Plus there would be private servers anyways, so the way they compete with that is actually just by lying. They just pretend it’s not theirs. Blizzard also dupes their own spectral tigers and sells for like $800 each. It adds up to a lot of money over the years, they’ve made like $20 million from spectral tigers.

Turtle has been consistently developing new "vanilla" content: they release multiple new zones and rework multiple classes in the time it takes Blizzard to do one mediocre balance patch of switching numbers around. They were a legitimate threat to Blizzard's paid Classic servers: "why would I, a customer, keep paying if I can get multiple times more content for free?
