Gaming went from THE most profitable to the LEAST profitable in a span of about 5 years from 2012-2017, before even the "adpocalypse" people like to talk about. I was getting about $1/1k views, and pulling 300k views per video, twice a week, 8 minutes long for ads. I had them lined up for weeks in advance. My money started lowering, for no actual reason, and youtube kept saying "idunno it's not us must be your content" despite my watch times being the same, CTR being the same (or even better), and more.It was a deliberate decision by youtube to lower how much they paid out, because they knew they didn't NEED to continue paying out. To this day, the ONLY category that gets the full rate of payout is financial video content. If you make finance content you can still get $1/1k views or even better. EVERYTHING else is varying flavors of worse.So, sponsorships are the only way to make the SAME amount of money you used to. Your videos went from needing to be 8 minutes, to 10, to 13 for minimum ad credit (which also means you have to shove in more ads to your content to get the same payment). The algorithm that youtube manually adjusts also prefers specific content. Some months they want longform stuff, others they want TV episode sized, some they want in between, some they even want shorts, and they will crater your channel into the dirt and not recommend it at all if you don't keep up. There are dozens of youtube aligned discords where partners discuss what the algorithm favors, but it's not hard to find elsewhere either. You'll see it based on what they recommend, lmao.tl;dr People want their money. They will do what they need to make their money. Selling out is not selling out, it's trying to make the same fucking money they WERE making before.besides merch, merch is selling out still.

Raid was paying people with 200-300k subscribers $2k per posted video, with HUGE bonuses based on how many people installed, and in that subset of installs, how many people paid for a package (even the 99 cent one). I don't have the email anymore but it was something like 100 people installing was an extra $50, 500 installing was an extra $300, and if you hit 500 paid purchases you got an extra like $400, so people who had millions of viewers were getting MONEY.But, others still would just quit entirely. All those dead channels (a lot of which were later sold for 5 figures) are a graveyard of youtube's incompetence.Also if you ever wondered how the tate brothers got their money, all that shit talking about escaping the matrix and how to financially grow by joining their ponzi scheme? financial content under youtube's labeling system. They made millions of dollars every month at their peak. Markiplier and jacksepticeye and jacksfilms all pivoted to variety which has a moderate rate of pay, that's why they barely do gaming content, it's usually gaming-adjacent so they can keep their label.Youtube's history as a creator is fucking fascinating. Shitty, but fascinating.
