The Batarian Hegemony is a fascist slaver state that keeps the vast majority of its population locked inside its borders while poaching slaves from other species. After the Council sided with the human Systems Alliance over the Hegemony, despite humanity barely being part of galactic politics for 20 years at the time, they pitched a fit and abandoned the Council, sealing off their borders entirely. Now the Batarian main export is pirates, slavers and Hegemony military commandos (usually all one and the same).
