DT is the story they actually wanted to write and it establishes the key yes but also specifically dimensional fusion which is what looks like the thrust of how the other reflections will be tackled in this godless saga

Dawntrail completely killed my love for the game. I stopped playing completely, I haven't even bothered to finish Dawntranny. Hope the next xpac at least has good story. FF has always been like a good B action movie. You go, enjoy it and then unsub until the next patch

So yeah plotwise there's no hard payoff, but the intentions were there originally to deal with Garlemald and then get right to Zodiark and Hydaelyn and Metion so they interweaved better.

I can't imagine a Garlean expansion doing much worse than the start of EW, but what if the natural cause of WFH shifting back to office, WoW players going back to WoW, etc caused the original ending slated for 7.0 to receive DT numbers? That's also not hard to imagine, it sucks but it definitely worked out for them. Maybe a bit too well given how complacent they became until DT made them realize they have to work for retention.
