Why didn't we ever get a Metroid 64? There were already other titles on N64 that proved that style of gameplay could work in 3D.

Just play Prime Hunters

it wouldn't be able to compete with Goldeneye and Perfect Dark

Sakamoto approached a few developers to do it, but apparently they all turned it down because they didn't think they would make a game better than Super Metroid.
My fanfiction is that the game Sakamoto wanted to make for Metroid 64 was actually Other M, but he didn't do it back then because Nintendo opted for cartridges instead of CDs, and the studio he approached was Angel, the team that put Resident Evil 2 on a cartridge.

is metroid the original gun and ball game?

Metroid 64 would've just a 2D platformer looking like mischief makers or kirby... it just wouldn't have had the same vibe as Super Metroid.

Metroid Prime was such a radical departure that no one believed in it before release, and I'm 100% positive no one within Nintendo would've thought to do something like that.

Basically Metroid 64 would've either been a shitty 2.5D platformer (looking worse than Super Metroid) or a shitty 3D first person adventure (not as good as Goldeneye and running as poorly as Perfect Dark). At least with the GCN and GBA, Nintendo was able to split the difference and release two different games with two different design goals.

Thank God nothing like that happened. Imagine having to put up with retards claiming that some trashy game running at 20 fps, covered in gray fog, all blurry, with 200 ms of input lag, heavily compressed audio, and gameplay designed for kids with zero skills is some kind of masterpiece, just like they say about other N64 abortion of games that they adore.

better than whatever gay shit you play

nintendo ran out of ideas for the franchise which is why it's been mostly outsourced. which has always struck me as weird because they refuse to do that for Fzero, and they only briefly tried with Starfox
>>
play The Divide: Enemies Within, on PS1

F-Zero GX was made by Sega. The Monkey Ball team that went on to become RGG Studio.

Nintendo didn't develop any of the GBA F-Zero games.
