im really curious where this idea of people ignoring the story comes from when nearly every year's top games are story-heavy.

emil pagliarulo has said something similar, but that felt more like him coping about his inability to write anything interesting.

oh yeah emil said story was not important because player would be busy building shacks... And it shows well in fallout 4 and starfield.

there's a sizable amount of people for whom games never evolved past things like wolf3d where the entire game is kill enemies->find secrets->go to next level, rinse and repeat
things like story are just flimsy motivations to get the player to "the action" and serve no greater purpose
