Not only do you have to come up with a new mystery with the different cast, that's another additional 3-4 hours of voice acting per trial so even if they did a route split at the start of the game that's doubling the size. As much as the back routes feel underutilized, they are a simple way of putting in alternate routes through the trials without deviating from the main path.
