Sonic dying would invalidate the entire point of the game. That's also why he defeats his own Antilion master badnik shortly after this cutscene, as it's getting in the way of Sonic finding the emeralds (these master robots were made for the sole purpose of finding and retrieving the emeralds, but failed to fulfill their purpose, hence why he needs Sonic). Or so the lore on the JP manual says.

He didn't create the lava, so Sonic killing himself in it is just as stupid as Sonic drowning or falling down a pit. Or maybe he purposefully broke any connecting rails to reach the pit to just enjoy the thrill of Sonic thinking he's about to fall to his death in lava, only to be saved by his nemesis, who then puts him in a different death trap. Still, let's be honest: We're talking about a guy who was once defeated by a treadmill that he himself set up. He's obviously not a sane individual.
