You don't cancel an entire game because a VA died. Maybe this contributed but there were definitely other reasons and they decided they could use this one to quell some negative reception. People are less likely to get mad if you say it happened because someone died, which also makes Insomniac even scummier for using someone's death to get out of a rough spot for them.
