The original's not extraordinarily difficult, once Peach gets some levels in her the difficulty goes off a cliff. Get the lazy shells and it becomes basically non-existent.
Which makes sense it was selling Mario to RPG fans and RPGs to Mario fans and had little patience for FF4(2)-level nonsense.
