>>737608092didn't that just get a third game a few months ago
>>737608092it's an interesting game but not a particularly good one
>>737605795The problem is "Good" isn't one quantifiable thing.Presentation usually gets people in the door more, how you stand out, something that catches the eye in the first place. After that it's a mix of things, and you're catering to niches, you must decide who you're NOT making the game for, as in, if you make an RPG, you're NOT making it for people that don't want an RPG, etc, and so you have to understand the more specific the game idea, the less people will talk about it or even give it a try. If you make a good RTS it might get some buzz, but the RTS market is tiny, and people willing to play anything but the core RTS games, is even smaller. What makes most "Friendslop" games work, is the presentation, something neat or interesting that's carried by people "Making the moments" with each other to generate buzz, but a lot of them end up not lasting because they don't have that much or aren't super good. They live on clips, and as soon as people search for it less, the algorithm spits it out and engagement plummets. For a lot of games, getting noticed is most of the battle. Fantastic games have been incredibly niche or small, and bad games have done great. Games that aren't really that special end up being ultra popular because of the presentation (FNAF) while "Better" games just flounder.

It is. >>737605795Dude that is gaslighting and setting devs up for failure lmao. Marketing is the end all be all - any indie dev could tell you steam gives you literally zero visibility until you reach certain engagement thresholds and obviously the quality of your game means fuck all if no one sees it.

>>737614692you need to make a video game first, chud

We wouldn't have threads full of steam gems under 100 reviews or so if that was the caseEvery sale I see the same shit, I see ubicrap, EA garbage and the same 20 other games I cannot give two flimsy fucks about. It's true it has been successful for some indie developers, but usually there's already enough community marketing to prop these up.Also you cannot really choose where you're placed on these lists. Every fucking steam next fest has like 7 billion demos. Nobody has time for that shit. I found some very simplistic games nobody talks about in there, but that was years ago when it was a new thing. Now for me to find something interesting is fairly difficult, but there's a huge, huge, HUGE pile of crap on top.

It's crazy how good /v/ gets when they actually play video games AND wants to discuss them with other people, rather than faggots like OP that are obsessed with trying to smugly lord over things, and will take any manner of shortcut to try to disqualify a game without giving it its due. >>737607093>company that doesn't make gamescs2dota2deadlockprobably new half life
>>737613774People have been saying for decades that the most important thing about making a game is making one YOU want to play. If it's executed well, people will come no matter how weird or niche your idea is. Look at fucking Zachtronics' games, they're as niche as it gets and they sell great because the devs love hardcore engineering puzzle games and made a really good one. Or games like Cruelty Squad that look absolutely hideous but still sell because there's genuine quality underneath that ugliness.
>>737614327Valve decides the placement and don't accept payment according to Steamworks FAQs. While I'm sure under the table deals are possible, there's been plenty of zero budget games that earned the top banner because they were causing a big enough buzz.
