Evil often gets shit for being the alignment that misses out on content/rewards, but this just shows that EvilGODS are experienced gamers that don't need free handouts to beat a game, while goodNIGGERS are casuals who need crutches to beat even the easiest encounters.
Evil just makes sense when you're old enough to appreciate a real challenge instead of having the system (glassy-eyed 50+ HR ladies) pat you on the head for being a professional cuckold.

Games rarely let you play as evil deceitful character.
Pretending to go along with someone just to stab them in the back is the peak evil.
No remorse, just pure self interest.
Evil trickster is also great archetype, giving people what they ask for without them realizing the consequences until it's too late.

To be fair to developers, it's probably insanely difficult to account for various "flavors" of evils (or good) when you're trying to write dialogue.
I recently replayed through BG1/2 as a lawful evil thief/cleric as a selfish mercenary with self-doubts, but frequently found myself hobbled, especially in BG2, by the dialogue just not expressing that in any capacity. I don't blame the writer for that, because how the hell would he know what I want? I think it's just an inherent problem of player intention vs. game limitations, at some point you have to draw lines in the sand to outline a character, even in open-ended games.
It's partially why I found myself preferring BG1 despite how comparatively shallow it is in player/companion development. At some point it's just better to leave it to player interpretation than try to write a variety of dialogue options to reflect whatever a player might be thinking their character might be like.

That's because there are nearly infinite flavors of evil and only a couple or one flavor of good.
Only way to fully realize the potential is by playing pen and paper.
Dialogue alone would sprawl for hours for each time you would want to say something. That's not a great experience.

Lawful evil warriors are only cool when their power wildly outstrips the people they mean to subjugate. They're way better as dominating villains than as underdog heroes. Barbarian heroes should be closer to chaotic neutral, like Conan the barbarian.

What games let you actually play that power fantasy though? Original god of war games maybe? Most games put the player in the position of an underdog that needs to build their strength. A lawful evil warrior isn't cool when he needs to struggle and isnt an absolute unit or force of nature.
>>
>>737626761
Play Tyranny and side with the legion rather than the horde. But unfortunately, it is so rare to have games where the PC is evil. The few games that let you "be evil" seem like after thoughts where the game treats you the same either way aside from an ending and a few dialogue choices.

>>
>>737630748
I get what you're saying, but that anon is right that "barbarian" is seen as savage and chaotic. Lawful-Evil is usually seen as Tyranny and Structured. It'd be like the whole, "good lich". Sure, I guess it's possible, but it's kinda antithetical.
You can be a primitive fighter without being a barbarian.
>>
>>737628510
>>737631739
Historically, most cultures considered barbaric (and even those in the modern day) are much more lawful than chaotic.

For instance Tacitus admires the Germanic peoples' strict adherence to their laws and code of honor. These are THE fundamental basis of the barbarian in western media, and the chief work on their tribes and culture definitively depicts them as lawful.

Take the Vandals for instance, their name to this day denotes an act of senseless barbarism. The first thing they did on conquering Roman territory was to crucify Romans who engaged in sodomy and other breaches of the Christian faith. Even their sack of Rome was not a senseless violent act, but a calculated move with legal backing as restitution for the Roman's breach of contract. (They had promised a political marriage to the King of the Vandals, then reneged on it). During the looting the Vandals adhered to the Pope's plea not to use violence on those who did not resist, and not to burn the city.

Even their conquest of Roman territory was performed after again, the Romans reneged on a treaty. Nearly every act of their violence was directly a response to Roman (chaotic) contract violation.

tl;dr D&D is utterly wrong, barbarians were NOT chaotic, and adhered more strongly to law than civilized peoples.
>>
>>737631739
Not that anon but hard disagree. Under the DnD base rules, sure, but a lawful barbarian isnt that insane of a concept. Consider real life examples like Ghengis Khan and Arminius that organized loose scattered low tech tribal peoples into fighting forces through complex rules and tributary systems. They might still totally burn down a castle and enslave all the women but only if it serves a purpose like warning others or in retaliation for a previous slight - not battlerage.

I see what you're saying. I would even call the Aztecs a text book Lawful Evil faction.
But I had assumed we are talking about fantasy. Usually when using Alignments, we are implying vidya or tabletop logic.
And all depictions of Barbarians as a class in these setting is the mindless savage that acts on rage and instict rather than law and duty.
The factions you listed, if they were in a fantasy setting, wouldn't be "barbarians" they would be lvl 1-8 fighters or clerics.
>>
>>737633657
That is because what fantasy calls a barbarian, reality calls an outlaw.
>>
>>737613248
Pretty sure D&D rules specifically prohibit Barbarians from being Lawful. Maybe 5E changed this, 5E made lots of things dumber.

>>737633849
From AD&D1e to 3rd/3.5 Edition, Barbarians had to use non-lawful alignments.
>>

>>
>>737634408
>>737633756
Not really, if we're being pedantic. ''Outlaw'' (before the meaning changed with the American West) comes from the vikings. It essentially means you're no longer legally a person. Someone could beat an outlaw to death in the street and suffer no consequences. Being labelled an outlaw is closer to being an exile, rather than a bandit or what you're referring to

>>737633657
There's sagas about viking kings going into a berserker rage during their last stand. While I understand that barbarians are rarely lawful, I can see them being that in some instances
>>
>>737636790
Yes really.
>outlaw means outlaw
Yes. Which is what a D&D barbarian is. The only difference is for some reason D&D societies tolerate their existence. One became an outlaw by get this, disregarding the laws and social norms of society. You were outside the law, and now no longer legally entitled to its protections.

I disagree that not having rights is a part of being a barbarian. I looked up their early dnd descriptions and it does say they hate cities and civilization, but I don't take that to mean they're outlaws. Also, I guess it depends on if you extend the idea of outlawness to the tribal community he can be a part of. If he can't even be a part of a tribe, then he's definitely not an outlaw as a rule
