Unfortunately you need a thief in this game and it sucks because pure thieves are useless trash that just slowly shoot little rocks and arrows at enemies at half the rate as everyone else while standing in the back. I think you can make more than one custom character at the start of the game but it's been awhile. If you can I would just make your own character whatever you want and make another custom character in your party to be thief hybrid
