How much old gaming content and mods are going to be lost now Lycos are purging Angelfire and Tripod?
>>
Why no responses? This is actual history and old modding content being erased here!
>>
>>737623436
Because 99% of /v/ is newfags, tourists, /pol/tard, or glowies. Nobody cares about vidya discussion on /v/
>>
I don't know what that is
>>
>>737624029
Imagine being such ignorant zoomer Retard. Angelfire and Tripod where web-hosting websites like Geocities you know what existed before social media ruined the Internet. They contain not only so many examples of 90’s-2000’s Internet culture, fan sites and creativity but also countless mod and levels for games such as Half Life 1.
>>
>>737622878
I'll be honest, I assumed they'd gone away a decade ago.
>>
>>737624294
They hadn’t they were really useful for finding lost mods for old games and awesome midi files. Now two of the last outposts of the Old Internet are going to be purged and nobody knows because they’ve become so Social Media indoctrinated to care.
>>
I mean, you didn't expect this? NOTHING is permanent. If you truly want things to last, you have to take initiative, download it when you see it, and mirror it somewhere. Mirror it multiple places ideally.

the best zoo tycoon databse website was hosted on a tripod domain FUCK
>>
>>737622878
The old internet is dropping like flies this year and I fucking hate it.
>>
The AIpocalypse has made server hosting exorbitantly expensive, so expect to see more of this.
It's also why catbox had to block a bunch of IP addresses and ranges since they were being used by datacenters and AI agents made by jeets to hammer their servers.
Don't you just love the future?
>>
>>737626352
almost like range banning should have been more commonplace and we should have gatekept our communities platforms and discussion areas more heavily. Korea did it and they're handling it fine (well, fine for koreans anyway). They immediately ban chinese and tell them to fuck off the their homeland every time they pop up in games, it's great.
>>
>>737626447
ip bans are not enough since vpns can dodge that.

the real challenge is how to design systems that can keep bots out while letting people in when the people are retarded and already lose to bots.
>>
>>737622878
End of an era, guess now would be the last chance to take snapshots of these sites
>>
>>737624026
its cause real vidya discussion gets banned.
Genuine threads get deleted faster than porn, the site was intentionally reduced to garbage.
>>
>>737627757
This is a video game board not a politics one and actual content from the Old Internet is far more important than the same culture war garbage from twitter, blusky and reddit.
>>
>>737627757
If you had your way, the stuff of humanity would be nothing but politics. There'd be nothing beyond. Fuck off and don't come back. You're everything that's wrong with the modern internet.
>>
>>737628618
You spending 24 hours a day reading angry tweets isn't making the world a better place, you stupid kike.
>>
>>737625790
I hope someone has an archive of those mods there was some really good content for the Zoo Tycoon games.
>>
>>737628618
I don't give a fuck faggot if everyone who cared about politics died tomorrow the world would be a better place.
>>
>>737622878
Good. Nobody born after 1990 deserves to know or learn of the golden era.
>>
>>737624026
/v/ is more /pol/ than the current /pol/, which has been wholly taken over by redditors.
>>
>>737622878
I didn't know what this is. I normally played wow, gmod sometimes so maybe i've used these sites and forgot? and elder scrolls games. So I mostly used moddb, nexus, cursedforge, and maybe the paradox site for ck2. Sucks they're going down. Really does feel like we're losing a lot of the old internet this year.
>>
>>737623436

It's sped up in the past year, though.
I still remember when I lost my homepage that was hosted on comcast's user spaces.
>>
>>737630250
its been taken over by shill bots
>>
>>737633360
>>737633652
It is speeding up and it's malicious as hell, people get called schizo for calling it out but there's groups that want to rewrite history, they are revisionists who want the "old world" gone. Soulful is a word that's tossed around a lot on here but it best describes the old internet, can't have that in a world they want to drain the color from. Keep archiving, anons.
>>
>>737622878
I was almost certain Angelfire shut down around the same time Geocities did. I'm surprised they made it THIS long. I remember I used to have an Angelfire page back in 98 or 99 and it got deleted for some reason.

This is the real reason to despise AI the destruction of the Internet history to replace it with slop. AI is doing everything Social Media and Smartphones but worse. Why does things continually get worse instead of better?
>>
>>737633360
Seven eights of Geocities destroyed but countless terabytes of woke activism, SJW whining and “Spongebob says trans rites” tweets preserved for an eternity.
I hate this timeline so much.
>>
>>737627757
the fact that you have to ask that question means you do not belong here. You are most likely an election tourist from /r/the_donald who has only a minimal interest in video games and mostly comes to this board to engage in retarded culture war cancer.
>>
>>737629797
But what if you want to experience that era again? What if you want to listen to some of those awesome midis? What if you want to use some of the mods and levels for games like Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight or Half Life 1 that are impossible to find outside of Angelfire? What then?
>>
34, gaming all my life, nolife chud, but ive never even heard of this
>>
>>737622878
ARCHIVE. FUCKING. EVERYTHING.
Let's not turn this into another geocities
>>
>>737627914
in all my years i have never actually seen this happen
the 'genuine vidya threads' people complain about being deleted are always, ALWAYS stealth generals that don't talk about the game at all, just other posters' circlejerks, or are just designated furry porn dumps akin to the old 'game boys' threads that still auto-flag your post as spam if you use the original title
>>
>>737640709
>nooo you're making too many threads it's a general
Curious how no one says this about the daily Baldur's Gate 3 threads. Or the daily Elden Ring threads. Or the daily LoZ threads. Or the near-daily Pokemon threads (despite them having a while ass board).
It's only the non-normalfag games that get accused of being generals.
>>
>he deleted his post
What a fucking pussy lel
>>
>>737640092
Were you a console gamer? Or just really no into game modding or fan pages? You must have at least heard of Geocities though?
>>
Yeah wait until you see what Google has been doing to your results and legacy content. You straight up won't be shown some shit anymore even with exact phrasing in quotes. They used to bury it behind various "search only for"/"show results with"/"repeat the search with the omitted results included" barriers but nowadays it's just gone. They also removed the cache feature a couple years ago. I predict within the next few years the old internet is going to start to be purged completely. A world before 2015 or so will cease to exist.
>>
>>737634882
yeah they are kikes and the WEF group with Trilateral Commission, its okay to call out and name the Jew if you aren't sold out to them.
>>
>>737624201
>They contain not only so many examples of 90’s-2000’s Internet culture, fan sites and creativity but also countless mod and levels for games such as Half Life 1.
Is any of that content really that important if in more than 20-30 years nobody has bothered to archive it in case this exact situation happens?

Oldfags have decades to avoid the inevitable, and when it's finally time, turns out nothing was done...
>>
>>737643739
Andrew Torba from Gab tried to fight back by opening up an alternative but Jews freaked out when nazis could post things but they couldn't spam their porn there they cancelled him. LOL. Subhuman jews are the ones to blame every single time. I don't even use Gab but I think the overreaction was just plain idiotic just like with Musk buying twitter. Oh no, bots deleted, so what?
>>
>>737626352
catbox had to block a lot of brownoid ip ranges because they were uploading raw pizza to it
>>
>>737644659
anyone uploading CP is a fed or a kike.
>>
>>737644795
catbox admin himself has outright stated that brazil ip ranges are the most frequent uploaders of pizza
>>
>>737644976
Who's to say feds aren't using Brazilian servers to upload their CP through VPN etc? You think people are going to upload CP on their own networks, get real.
>>
>>737626447
VPNs and the fact that pajeets have frauded their way into actual human countries means range bans won't fix jeets using free hosting as middleware for their AI slop
>>737630252
Geocities, Angelfire etc. were free web hosting services from the 90s where you could put up a webpage (you had to make it yourself) and maybe host some files.
>>
>>737643739
This is something I don’t understand all the archiving organisations like Internet Archive wait until the moment of imminent doom to start archiving when it’s at least almost to late and then make a mad dash to try and save everything. Yet they make sure to archive Wikipedia obsessively thousands of times down to the most obscure page yet sites like Geocities were lucky if they got their pages archived once.
I can’t count the times when I’ve been looking for a lost mod, find the mod site on Internet Archive and find that only the front page has been archived and none of the files.
>>
>>737643739
archiveteam has been slowly archiving angelfire as a warrior project from what I understand
>>
>>737624026
99% of the people on the board now never made a site back in the day but will pretend they understand the generation that built Geocities. In the coming days we'll see a bunch of fags larping about sites that they totally had, or idiots making videos about forgotten content or some shit. This world is a joke.
>>
>>737622878

Alright, so what 30 year old stuff off AngelFire are you running out to save right now?
>>
>>737652671
They were one of the corner stones of the old Internet and after Geocities closed you could still find old Internet content on them. They were brilliant for finding old mods and midi files the Internet will be a hell of worse place without them.
You were into HL1 modding did you ever download any levels for HL1 multiplayer mods like Action Half Life, Vampire Slayer or Wizard Wars? I keep trying to find archive of levels for those mods and it would be great to see if you know of any or have any of those levels.

>>737655867
I’ve wondered the same thing and also why does the Internet Archive have such a Wikipedia fetish? They archive that place obsessively down to the last page thousands of times. If they archived Geocities and other Web Hosting sites as much as they archived Wikipedia then nothing would have been lost. Wikipedia isn’t even going anywhere it doesn’t need archiving and nothing on it is worth preserving unlike the glory of the Old Internet that should have been archived.
>>
>>737655284
>If you think that anything made before the woke Cultural Revolution and social media hell is good that’s just cause you’re nostalgic goy
Fuck off kike
>>
It's very sad to hear about, but I fear that I wont realize what specific things I'm losing until I go to look something up that I return to once every couple of years, only to realize it was hosted there.
I'm dreading that sense of getting blindsided by something I knew was coming, if that makes sense at all
>>
>>737658282
I know exactly how you feel the worse scenario is when you know that it could all be purged but at the same time lacking any obvious means of saving the content.
>>
>>737658912
yeah I can see that, like it's all slipping just out of reach
>>
>>737655385
Why are some modding sites like this? What happened to just letting you browse files at your leisure without sign up?

It was a notorious problem back in the day with old forums too. I don't know why people are like this
>>
>>737644795
>>737645334
don't worry, just contact to corporations to purge torrent search engines.
>>
>>737661884
I suppose it’s a way to force people to obey their power tripping rules if you get banned you can no longer access the mods as well as post on the forums.
>>
>>737661884
Still is, for as great as places like F95 are for getting hgames for free, you still have to fucking sign up to them to use them.

I found a nice 'classic' Neopets server and wowee guess what? Infested with modern faggotry politics. Jarring and in your face too.
>>
>>737622878
I mean someone should just go hoover it all up to archive. It'd probably all come in at like under 1tb or something for misc stuff for games up to about 2000. Like literally I just googled what is the size of all PC games from 1990-2000 combined and it guessed .5-1tb and that sounds not farfetched at fucking all when tons of games were like 100mb total.
>>
>>737664217
Considered how small the files are it’s absurd how hard it is to find lost mods and levels for old games. You think people would have preserved them seeing how little hard drive space they actually take up.
>>
>>737664049
I found a similar problem with some modding communities maybe not as bad as the but I was permanently banned from Massassi temple forums for using the word Troon once even though it made sense in the context that I used it as I was complaining about them moving the forums to discord. They could have given me a warning or a temporary ban but no the power tripping moderator who doesn’t even play games perma banned me. What’s worse is that I was contributing more to the site than most of the members had in years.
>>
>>737664049
The infinite rainbow identities garbage was created so fast, less than 10y.
>>
NovaBBS went away last year. Anandtech went away. Every sort of online communication where you post to the whole group and there is no filtering algorithm to pick and choose who sees what.

Anons, we should all set up printing shops.

>>737622878
Wait what?
Why isn't this all over the news like the Geocities shutdown?
And it's happening right when the Internet Archive is in crisis, too.
Surely the Library of Congress or some billionaire will step in and make sure everything's archived for posterity?

>>
>>737668732
>don't have a few terabytes worth of storage
I'm so sorry
>>
>>737666937
The Library of Congress only cares about archiving Twitter it’s why they have the entire words of woke activists archived in the thousands of terabytes yet barely terabyte of Geocities was saved.
I wish a billionaire had saved everything that was on Geocities and other websites that have been destroyed. I’m really surprised that there wasn’t at least one putting their resources into saving the old Internet. If I had that kind of money I would certainly have.
>>
>>737622878
>>737623436
Modders themselves will eventually stop backing up their own stuff. So even if they used a service like Angelfire the links to hosting services wound up being dead ends more often then I liked to see.
>>
>>737671275
I really wonder why they’re like this, they create these amazing mods that clearly took a lot of time and effort but then they just let it all be erased from history. You think they would actually want to preserve their own material.
>>
>>737671752
I did my thing and once burnout kicked in that was enough. Eventually I figured if it was important enough for somebody then they kept it around for themselves and it doesn't matter anymore. Then after forgetting about it, I'd probably vaguely recall it and may or may not have deleted the files myself.

if anything I find the ones who continue to do big projects on passion alone to be amazing for being able to avoid succumbing to burn out.
>>
>>737671752
Sometime you stop giving a damn. I don't make any effort preserving my irl stuff either anyway. Like keepsakes that were from my childhood.
