>Hundred dollar controller
Gabecube is gonna be over a $1000 isn’t it
>>
I honestly think they'll just cancel the Steam Machine, the Frame will quietly release for $1000 in November or something
>>

Taking away those two disgusting track pads will slice the price in half and make it look nicer.

That's unfortunately not very expensive for a modern controller. I was trying to buy one recently and I avoided a few because they were priced at $200.

no one fucking needs trackpads. they shouldn't be forced as the standard and help rack up the price.

same person here, and yes I do. they add to the unneeded size of the system and make it not fucking portable.
>>
>>737629145
The only example I ever see is playing games intended for mouse like 4X titles, ie Civilization.
The idea hardly made sense a decade back with the first batch of Steam controllers, and now even less so to me when absolutely everything now has controller support, including aforementioned 4X games.
>>
>>737629145
Idk what other people use them for but I used them on the Deck to play dozens of pirated VNs because you can have it emulate a mouse input. Outside of that Ive seen some community configs use them for 2 extra D pads that have custom actions bound to them.
>>
YEAH YEAH ITS TOO EXPENSIVE

SO I BETTER EXPECT YOU FAGGOTS TO NOT CLOG UP THE QUEUE WHEN IT GOES UP FOR ORDER
>>
>>737629705
sorry bro but that'll be $350 plus tip when I scalp it back to you
>>
>>737627358
If true that's really cheap. I was ready to pay $150 plus more. It looks like a brick but it has all the features I want.
>>
So does it connect via Bluetooth or comes with a dongle?

Bluetooth sucks.
>>
>>737630524
I just wish it had dual stage triggers
>>
>>737627358

If not, DOA.
>>
>>737628989
Yeah, at $5 that basically just pays for the S&H. I got 2 of these controllers; one for me and another for family and neither of us used them beyond the initial set up and test phase. This should have never made it to market but that's what happens when you get high on your own farts.

I wouldn't be surprised. Or they'll release it and it'll just be very limited stock.
PS6/Xbox Helix aren't that far off, and Steam Machine with its roughly base PS5 level specs is going to look like a really bad deal in comparison.
>>
>>737630671
It has TMR
>>
>>737630697
The controllers were sold for $5 because they were sued for patent infringement and had to get rid of the stock.
>>
>>737630784
>Significantly better for any first-person game.
Eh... not better than a mouse. All the modern fps games have some aim assist running for controllers, you don't need to be precise like back in the 2008s. Halo, COD and Gears of War changed it forever with their aim assists. Kids nowadays don't even know they get aim assisted, they genuinely think they're good.

Valve is most famous for first person shooters, and you're supposed to a Steam Controller trackpad like a mouse in an FPS. It seems like a compromise that pleases nobody, but the idea was to use it for games that are better on mouse and keyboard than controller.
>>
Steam frame price though? If it even approaches the index price it's DOA

It's a terrible controller but no. 100 dollars feels steep and I probably won't get one but why are people expecting controllers to not get more expensive along with everything else that is getting more expensive?

>>
>>737635882

>>
>>737630956
They couldn't fit a mouse on the controller. The trackpad is the second best solution, just ahead of a full-sized high quality trackball.
>>

>>737629145
I can think of a bunch of action games with aim modes
>nu-Tomb Raider
>Shadow of War
>Arkham series
and so on. Using thumbsticks for aiming in those games always sucked ass, which is why I sometimes went for keyboard and mouse instead if the game expected me to aim often enough.
With trackpads suddenly this doesn't become an issue, and I can play them with a controller no problem.
>>
>>737638358
Yeah there's a reason why most of those kinda games have auto aim included because they know the manual aim sucks ass.

>>
>>737628278
Controllers and keyboards have been perfected for decades which is why they dont need to change
You will never be a woman
>>
>>737638280
Innovation should be a four letter word more often.
Making controllers is an old science and people already figured it out 20 years ago. You either like asymmetrical or symmetrical designs and they were perfected long ago.
Being unique doesn't make you useful.
>>
>>737627358
Gabe you let me down, bro
>>
>>737627454
I doubt they cancel the machine, but it's clear the parts shortage is fucking them over massively.

Not the end of the world if it gets delayed and they upgrade parts. But at this point Valve needs to big dick AMD and their suppliers to actually supply shit. Even Sony and MS are getting fucked, but at least they can get PARTS for shit to try to sell it.
>>
>>737627358
What’s the point of trackpad. If you want good aiming with a controller you use gyro. If you want to play something like an RTS, trackpad I imagine would still feel like complete dogshit. Valve should have invested into standardizing gyro instead of this ugly as fuck trackpad shit

>>737640229

>>
>>737627358
Realistically the ps6/helix controllers are going to be close to $100 too.
The only reason the price hasn't went up on the current model is because they had enough of them produced prior to the economy shitting itself.
>>

>playing cod black ops
>want to chill on the couch
>dont want to use caveman analog sticks
>add joystick to left touchpad for movement
>add mouse for right touchpad
>now i have max precision for both movement and mouse
unfortunetly not all games can do gamepad+mouse so this controller having joysticks leaves both options available.

also a ton of people use the touchpads for radial menus etc

>>737629290
that would be the huge joysticks making it non portable. unless you want to use shitty joysticks like the one on 3ds or vita
>>
>>737630561
both. it can do normal bluetooth, wired, or dongle
>>
>>737639957
It's because a lot of older games just don't support gamepads.
Playing VTMB on gamepad is miserable.
>>
>>737630956
yes it is. i used the og steam controller on fortnite and it was just as good as mouse. you just need to actually try and learn to use the device instead of giving up after 5 mins. gta games also worked well
>>
>>737633789
>perfected
>by having games take control for you
just watch gameplay on youtube, you dont play games
>>
>>737635882
because people are afraid of new things. theyve been on joysticks for 20 years and hate the idea of learning an input device that doesnt hold their hands. most of these psbabies and nintendorks dont even want to learn kb+m
>>
>>737638528
manual aim with joysticks. the thing trackpads are trying to replace? you know thats why valve (and nintendo) try new input methods right
>>
>>737633789
I used to think this but nah. The Bone controller is the best followed closely by the SeX controller.
The SeX controller would be the best but the textured grip feels bad and the rubber on the thumbsticks comes apart within a year or two.
>>
>>737639957
so sad to see posts like this. valve already standardized gyro on all their controllers ever. track pads only help and someone who learned to use gyro cant see that?
>>
>>737627358

>>
>>737629145
Strategy games. Mouse and keyboard emulation for games without (full) controller support.
>>
>>737627358
Does anyone else have Steam fatigue? Like why am I paying $99 for a controller and $1000 for a console which is digital only and I don't actually own the games I buy?
>>
I like the selling feature is a fucking trackpad. Lmao yeah because everyone loves using laptop trackpads...
>>
>>737627358
All this goes tos how is that 4chan is full of no-game niggers who last played a game a decade ago and think controllers are still 45 bucks.
>>
>>737643098
theres a subset of pc boomers who have never owned a console so they react to dual sticks the same way your grandma would. For them a laptop trackpad is actually preferable.
>>
>>737627358
>yet you can do so much more
like what? scroll lists with your thumb?
>>
>>737642887
Why don't you own them? what?
>>
>>737643098
Honestly I loved using my 2009 laptop's trackpad, it was fucking excellent. It was the dogshit change to smooth ones with no physical buttons that ruined them.
>>
>>737639671
The issue is the more they wait the more outdated the machine becomes. Sony and MS will probably reveal their next gen soon and when that happens the steam machine will be seen as extremely underpowered, i doubt it will even be able to play newer games.
>>
>>737645592
All the hard work is done, they just need to buy a newer chip to solder onto the mobo. next gen consoles are going to be expensive too.
>>
>>737645592
>>737645740
Something I noticed is that they pit a lot of effoer into making it small and handling thermals that come with it. But like why? Just make it bigger, why give yourself a headache over something most people wont care about
>>
>>737645870
it has to fit in a tv stand, its not going under a computer desk. If you're going to have to go custom anyway then making it smaller isn't costing them more. it keeps down material and shipping costs.
>>
>>737645592
What the fuck difference does "power" make when there are no exclusives worth getting on console? AAA games are uniformly shit anyway. This fucking myth about needing more powerful graphics cards and RAM and shit needs to die already.

I have not seen a single mention of the dpad. I don't care about track pads and gyro lol, only slop uses that
>>
>>737649423
It's a basic dpad. Probably the same as on the Deck so nothing special.
>>
>>737627358
At this point im more excited about what the chinks will be able to do with the new ARM shit with proton and stuff, will probably result in way better handhelds that are actually portable AND probably cheaper
>>
>>737629145
I mostly use them for additional inputs, and they're great for that. I can have a dpad on both sides of the controller, a button to turn gyro on/off, or even my own custom radial menus. SteamInput lets them be used for almost any input, so their function as a mouse is just a bonus for me in most games. The DS4 trackpad had similar, albeit more limited functionality with SteamInput which was also nice.
>>
>>737627582
Those trackpads are the killer feature and make games designed to only work with mouse and keyboard viable to play on a controller.
