The issue with Nikke outside of story mode is that it's just extremely time gated and you can't even whale your way through it. You need to get your team power rating up to progress the campaign and you get a slow passive daily income of leveling materials+some from events. At this point a new player is probably looking at around 12 months of progress to catch up to the story. It took me about 8 months from start but they've released several story patches since then and the power requirement creeps up every time. It's not an issue once you finally catch up since the passive income from the ~3-4 months between story patches is enough to keep up but it's slow going to get to that point.
This was very satisfying to finally clear.
