I remember these games where you can play as giant monsters from my childhood, but as far as I'm aware no one is doing it these days. What's up with that?

You got FFXVI
And Gigabash
Type 0 also lets you directly control the summon monsters

Unfortunately most monster games have been relegated to cutesy pokemon mascot catchers

can basically be summarized as the following: Capitalism and the democracy of financialism leads to higher proliferation of few highly successful things while diminishing and outphasing things that are less popular.
It's no different than Consolidation. When Microsoft buys 28 game companies they don't stay unique over time, because now they're just Microsoft. Eventually they'll only make sequels or games that are doing what is currently trendy to do, because anything else is a waste of spending vs return on investment.

So even though some of these games sold well enough to justify making them again, the industry itself outgrew them because the industry keeps finding only the Best(tm) thing, and then does more of that, and less of anything else.

The monsters are on the cutesy mascot side but Gigabash looks cool

The most recent one, godzilla on the ps4, flopped because godzilla wasnt faster than sonic.

He wasn't supposed to be. It was an accurate giant monster sim, right down to the size-induced low speed.

Rigging monsters AKA anything that's not a humanoid takes way more time and effort to do. Plus, monsters are dumb fantasy stuff and the idiots running the industry now only care about cinematic experiences and compelling (read: pretentious) storytelling, and in some cases, monsters are adjacent to 'furry', which is bullshit.

This is also why mascot platformers died off. Sonic, Mario and DK are tolerated due to their prestige and seniority, but you'll still have people call their games "Games for Children" or a "Children's franchise".

Matter of fact, it makes a lot of sense now, those people are AAA shiteaters, /v/ got swarmed by them slowly but surely.

I shudder to imagine just how little testosterone this guy has

He's probably a faggot who self-inserts. He can't think of seeing things from another perspective and he has to have a generic human to stay engaged in a story. Assholes like him are why you can't have straightforward stories with non-human characters or designs, in his mind cartoony = kiddy.
