Better online discussion of games due to the higher quality people that used the Internet. Tons of high effort posts, no buzzwords. People hadn't been oneshot by social media algorithms, only had access to a handful of games at a time (christmas presents + local video store rentals), and therefore appreciated what they were playing and invested their energy into each game without distraction. LAN parties were common since not everyone had good Internet, and it let you play multiplayer games on 0 ping.

I recently had a dream that I was cognizant, while dreaming, was taking place in 2013, and in-dream I was gobsmacked by just how much better of a place the world felt then, even though I know 2013 is basically the year the internet first became unusable. The weather was nicer, the people were more relaxed, and the magic was still there. I am 100% certain that if I time-traveled back to then, it would feel the exact same way IRL.

>What was gaming like in the 2000s?
You know how even EA's games, on their into logo cinematics, had these sound effects and slogans trying to sound as fresh and cool as possible?
That reflects the era otherwise as well, game developers were clearly cutting edge technology and design pioneers because that helped bring in the cash. Designers had grander visions because we weren't hitting practical limits of graphics and memory use yet, every year or two someone would actually release a game seriously unlike what had been seen previously and creative projects got monetized because it still wasn't that crazy expensive to make the games.

The games were also a lot cheaper and more toy-like in many ways on the parts the developer did not have resources to pour their focus on, just sort of little jank that was commercially watched through fingers at the time but that wouldn't seem like it'd fly today. In GTA: San Andreas you had quite consistent-feeling driving model with plenty to drive across, but then you hop to the gym for a bit and it's just button mashing for a little bit.

>not going after the HFCS shit
>not going after food dyes or the numerous other poisons
>not going after the BPA leakages
>not going after the lead or cobalt poisonings

Some would say, it's a false flag. Probably is, considering the massive MUH CARBS MUH SUGARS MUH LOW FAT DIET MUDDAFUCKA type shit that was flying around for decades. Not like McDicks didn't increase the portion sizes over the years anyways. It's all bullshit blame for obesity, when it's sedendary lifestyle + poisoned foods + crash diet shocks, but revealing that means several billion dollar industries crash overnight.

In case you wanted the secret diet for losing weight, it's finding out your TDEE , eating around 500-1000 calories below that. And running Intermittent Fasting like 1-2 days a week. There, suck my fucking dick corpos

I grew up gaming in the 90's and i remember having conversations about what if they made a 3D gta holy fuck, then the PS2 and gta 3 happened. And then you think how good multiplayers tfc classic/everquest were in 1999 and we ended up with tf2 and wow.... Gaming in the 90's was awesome, to see video games developing from like wolf 3d to half life in the space of about 5-6 years still gives me goosebumps, but it really kicked in when the 00's rolled around.

It was more single player focused. If you did play multiplayer it was with friends locally. Online multiplayer existed but it was still in it's infancy. I never had Xbox Live in the sixth gen because I couldn't convince my parents to pay for it. They thought paying for a online service when they're already paying for internet to begin with was retarded. Honestly they were right. It is retarded to pay for an additional internet service when you're already paying for internet.

Kids are already calling the pandemic era "good times".
Everyone was online, you could easily hit up a group of 10 of your friends and play some rounds of among us.
It's all relative. The 90s and 2000s had their problems, between the war in the sandbox, y2k and the 2008 financial crisis, not to mention NINE-ELEVEN. The reason we have nostalgia for that era is because we were kids/young adults and didn't have to care about all the problems of the time. Now we're older and have to actually give a shit, and giving a shit is tiring.

I miss it. Every time I see a can of SPAM I think about a particular summer morning when I was playing Gauntlet: Dark Legacy on my 13" TV with built in VCR and my dad came in and asked if I wanted some SPAM & eggs. I ate SPAM & eggs with my dad while we watched Andy Griffith on TV Land and then I went back to my room and started those cool Egypt levels. Egypt stuff in games is always cool.

Consoles were king. It was far more a group activity with a group of dudes hanging out in a dorm room or someone's house playing mostly sports or fighting games with 2 players and passing the controller on loss while drinking 40s and smoking blunts with wu-tang blasting. everyone had a variety of games from different genres but there was a lot of buying the hot new shit and trading in your old games that weren't 10/10 masterpieces to do so so libraries never grew huge. You'd have different friends with different systems too so you'd get exposed to everything. PC chads played quake or starcraft or some shit and the pc sections in gamestop or babbages grew smaller and smaller until it was one half of an aisle, waiting for Gaben to come and save PC gayming.

If you were on PC, pretty mediocre. The industry was creaming itself over consoles and hated PC's for "piracy" and the only games to play were shooters, strategy games, online shit and random shovelware. Emulators for consoles like N64 or PS1 were in a weak state. Copy protection malware on physical discs. Gays for Winblows Die. Crappy console ports. Etc etc etc. PC gaming was at its best in the 90's, then only improved when Steam got really good.

Same and same, I only stopped using them when they both stopped working within a few years of one another (monitor overheated due to something stupid, TV was just a cheap brand so it only lasted 10 years instead of the usual meth addict's lifespan)

>the higher quality people that used the Internet
No one just handed you internet access 20+ years ago, it was something you made an effort to get. You had to set up your own modem. Depending on where you lived you might have a shitty ISP. Sometimes they would have to run a CAT5/Coaxial cable through the walls of your fucking house just so you could connect. It took effort.

Compare that to now when every phone plan gives you unlimited online access and we just give old smartphones to naked Zulu warriors because "fuck it".

Back when the internet was small, search engines could literally find anything. You could type in a quote from a thread you read the week before + the forum you saw it and the top link would be that thread. Now people try to cheese the algorithm so much you're lucky if what you actually want is in the top 50 results.

Giving people that level of freedom gave us so much. I don't think people realize how much of recent gaming comes from mods.

>Team Fortress spawned all the team/hero shooters. Quake mod.
>Defense of the Ancients spawned literally all MOBAs. Warcraft 3 mod.
>Counter Strike is still being played competitively today. Half Life mod.
>Battle Royal mode (the Fornite juggernaut). ARMA2 mod.

We're living in the shadow of 2000s gaming. We peaked and we all know it. We're caught in a repetition of the same cycle from 20 years ago with almost no innovation.
>>
>/v/: My childhood was the worst. I was a friendless loser who was bullied by everyone for being a gamer and girls used to make fun of me and I never even got to so much as touch one much less have sex.

The giants of today started as the mice of yesterday. But the mice of today will become the behemoths of tomorrow.
There's always tons of innovation in modding and indie games, you just don't play those anymore. You're still playing the same things you were playing 20 years ago.

Nobody identified as a "gamer" back then... It was a stigma. People hated gaymurs... Playing games was something you would do if you weren't out playing basketball or swimming, it was like a rainy day activity... Else you were a fuckin nerd like me..
>>
>>737692371

This is such crap.

I played video games. Was never bullied for it. No stigma from it. Still had friends. Still had girlfriends.

You weren't ridiculed because you were a "nerd". You were ridiculed because you were a loser and did nothing about it.
