Good people create it, build it up over years, then evil people move in, evil proceeds to corrupt and eventually destroy it, as that's the only thing it's able to do. Good people move on to their own projects and the cycle continues. The only effective countermeasure is a critical mass of good people with incredibly high autism levels to sustain the project despite all attempts to ruin it, see wikipedia.
