Without meming, what was his problem? Misanthropy or nihilism wouldn't have an out so effective as the one he takes, nor would sadism just block off joy from everything else until he intuits the one thing he actually feels joy from.

He was a sociopath who believed his sociopathy was was a Job-like condition God placed upon him to prove Original Sin was real.
So when he discovered what was essentially a nascent god of Evil, he wanted to know if it would be evil when it was born.
If it could, without any outside influence, truly be evil, then Original Sin would be definitively proven.
