I used to like it until I read the interviews and chats the developers had with people to answer lore questions. It became obvious that nothing in the game is actually planned or designed, but random in-jokes they cobbled together at the time. At this point, I've come to realize that being unable to release a followup for 34 years is due to Star Control 2 being a complete and utter accident.

It makes it hard for me to enjoy the setting when the writers themselves respect it less than the average "localizer" does for eastern games.

Tried playing this recently. Found exploring really obtuse, but didn't wanna just look everything up on the wiki.
Eventually bullied my way into an alliance with the Spathi, and made friends with the Zoq-Fot-Pik. Everyone else wanted to kill me or didn't care. Then I want on a long trek to the source of those berserker probes. Nearly ran out of gas twice and found had to run from even more badguys. When I finally made it home I found out the Spathi had sealed themselves off on their home world and the Zoq-Fot-Pik had been genocided while I was away.
Haven't played since. After hours of progress I felt like I was nearly at square one again.
