the gameplay was good, it gave you the gem hunter upgrade right off the bat and it fixed a lot of the jenky shitty minigames that were bad due to poor controls, but it looks worse, the sky boxes are worse, the lighting is worse and they censor a ton of random shit and the art direction is worse

Spyro 1 was kind of an upgrade.
Spyro 2 and 3 were downgrades with rushed animations and environment design. If you're not an autist like me, it shouldn't bother you that much.

It was okay. The originals still play well and giving them right-stick camera control didn't feel like some big game-changer. But at least it felt as close to the originals as possible and didn't have fuck-ups N.Sane had with their pill-shaped collisions and broken jump arcs. Visuals are okay although I'd definitely choose the originals over sort of soulless looking character models and bleak colors. But I appreciated an option to switch to the original soundtrack (the new arrangement was pretty nice compared to hit-or-miss tracks of N.Sane Trilogy).

I just recently played through Spyro 2 on this, first time in years playing through it the intended way without the unlock all abilities cheat (the backtracking really isn’t that bad).
It’s quite good except for some ugly NPC redesigns, and some environment colors being noticeably downgraded to me. There were some levels that made me stop and think “yeah, this one actually looks pretty nice”
Moving on to Spyro 3 now, Cloudy Spires was the first redesigned level that made me wonder what the Hell they were thinking. Original had smooth structures that resembles clouds, replaced with jagged rocks in Reignited.
I dropped 1 halfway through (wasn’t my favorite of the original trilogy). I’ll go back to it later

There's a certain feel to the originals that the remake doesn't quite manage to recapture. It's difficult to articulate beyond the SOUL/SOULESS meme but if you remember playing the original PS1 games back in the day then something definitely feels off.

Also nu-Spyro is the wrong shade of purple.

I was 10 when the first game came out and enjoyed all 3 and even season of ice. I have nostalgia for them like everyone else and would aggree OG had more charm and the remake designs were pretty ugly but still enjoyed it.

because the original wasn’t drowning in fucking shrubbery and ambient occlusion, that’s why

PS1 environments had like 3 props and a skybox doing 90% of the heavy lifting. negative space was the aesthetic. big flat colors, weird fog, chunky geometry. it felt dreamlike because your brain filled in the gaps.

remake devs saw that and went “needs more DETAIL” and now every level looks like a theme park queue line. more rocks, more vines, more clutter, more lights, more shit just sitting there.

sometimes less really is more and the PS1 literally forced them to understand that.
