Fortnite made fucktons of money but also required spending fucktons of money or otherwise it would no longer make money. It was all reliant on a hyper expensive daily content pipeline.
When eventually the line stopped going up and a dollar spent was no longer turning into two dollars of revenue, they were fucked.
Any cuts to spending would lead to drastic decreases in revenue, and any increase in spending would no longer bring in more money. And the current rate of spending was no longer profitable.
The only thing left to do was downsize the company, cut spending at the expense of lowered revenue, and hope that eventually the two lines would meet at a profitable point again.
