2017 is when the switch and SMO came out.
in 2016 they released super mario run because wii u was losing so much money they started dabbling in mobile games.
one is a pivotal moment in the series' history and the other is a mark of shame for the company and a footnote for the franchise at best.
that's why they skipped 2016 and not because of the retarded culture war shit you're thinking of. you're watching a commercial for a kids movie btw.
