It's a fun game but the combat is really janky. It presents itself as a skill-based system with the feints, combos and what-not but none of those systems matter if your martial stats are too low. You will never land combos if your opponent is more experienced because you're going to be deflected or riposted before you can land the third or fourth hit of your combo. Spending gold to train with combat masters is a good idea to alleviate this issue, but I wish the combos were more relevant part of the game's combat from the get-go, because by the time you're high level enough to hit your opponent three or four times without getting interrupted, you're hitting through their defenses anyway, making the unblockable part of combos pretty much useless.

They didn't manage to fix this issue with the sequel either, though at least they made masterstrikes a more interesting mechanic.
