>patronizingly childlish tone/writing>barely any story>enemies with health bars>constant flow interruptions>no Spin Dash>no Chao GardenIt's baffling that Sega thought this was the right direction to take after the Adventure games
Nigga it's a Sonic game, literally for 6-8 years old. You are not a child anymore, and it's no longer 2003.
>>737693857It was a right direction. Sonic is supposed to be free, this was one of his "freest" games. Not everything neds #2189012 lines of muh lore.

>>737694059Yeah they basically said they couldn't just continue from SA2's story for their first multi-platform game because people would be confused. That's why they did with ShadowTH instead and it worked out way better. :^)I agree though. Story heavy Sonic games always come at the cost of worse gameplay, which already wasn't great to begin with. Just look at Frontiers. I know there's plenty of reasons why that game is "mid", but it's obvious developmental effort went into just about everything but the core gameplay. Not the least of which was the big overblown nothingburger of a story. This all stems from SA2's focus on story first and gameplay second. That isn't to say that the Adventure formula can't work with a big dumb plot. I think SA1 pulls this off much better than SA2 since it has hub worlds that make you actually interact with the story as a player more. In SA2 you're constantly teleporting around to new stages and watching cutscenes. The pacing feels way more rushed, and there's no downtime to really absorb anything for most people. There's a disconnect. Aside from '06, Unleashed is the only other "true" Adventure game I think, since it actually follows SA1's formula much more closely and I think the overall package feels more cohesive, even if you think the game isn't that great. '06 could have been another example, but it took all of SA1's hub's problems and made them worse. (Bigger, emptier, and easier to get lost in the first time around.) Unleashed did a great job of streamlining. Sadly, I think this open world slop is here to stay, so hubs are kind of pointless now. (SXSG doesn't count since it's just one hub that acts as a stage select, which is fine, but it's not quite the same thing.) So we've kinda got the opposite problem now with Frontiers: The pacing is too fucking slow, and it's easy to forget what's going on in the plot since you're mostly just dicking around in "HIRE THIS MAN Zone" collecting hundreds of items.
>>737693857I had this game as a kid. Even though I beat it multiple times, I thought it was super mid.
>>737694742....Playstation.
>>737693857>It's baffling that Sega thought this was the right direction to take after the Adventure gamesIt was the highest selling of all the 3D games consistently all the way up until Frontiers finally dethroned it.
