Xenogears is one of my favorite games but I never fucked with Xenosaga. Is it worth playing?

Yes it is. I don't know how soulless you have to be to not love the fuck out of this series. 2 looks weird because they didn't know how to do graphics or cinematics yet, but 3 is the best the Xeno series as a whole has ever, ever looked.1 is a pretty clearly unfinished game, but it does the heavy lifting of getting you reinvested in the Xeno world.2 is a great story, gameplay is a bit better than 1, music is much better.3 however is so good I recommend it even to people who haven't played the first two. You will be missing out on a lot of kino, but it includes a very detailed in-game wiki and glossary. I cannot stress enough how fucking cool everything in 3 is. If you like these three games, the four Xenoblade games and their DLCs are also worth a look. The first two numbered games are quite different, but if you play Xenosaga you'll shear and feel a lot of echoes of older games until you get to X Definitive and Future Redeemed and see how much of this series carries forward, including Xenogears.The overarching Xeno series is one of the most rewarding series in gaming because of the series through lines and the way you can see Takahashi's vision getting clearer with every iteration.Give it a go, man.

There will be a few moments here and there that surpass the original (generally what is known as "sakuga") but for the most part you are getting a worse package that is missing tons of important details. Many times the story is only adapted to the halfway point, if that.

Dont skip the whole series. If the first game doesn't click with you, PLEASE play Xenosaga 3 at the very least. It's required reading for Xenoblade.
It's good, but might be hard to play today if you're young because it can be slow with lots of cutscenes. They went too hard in wanting a unique battle system in 2 that killed the series (3 games instead of a planned 6)

The mecha designs are all objectively great. Also there are visual glitches in certain places if you don't play the game in software mode on PCSX2.

Last time I played this I used the attribute pushing method and just destroyed the last boss. I have not played it in a while. I do wish I could go back and experience KOSMOS's awakening or the other ass pull things she did. Good times. Maybe when I get around to building a home theater that I can plug my ps2 into I'll play it again.

There was much more interesting shit going on in 2004 for me to care about my nostalgia for Xenogears by that point. Xenosaga 1 was already a snoozefest with terribly long dungeon grinding that I just didn't care about 2 when it rolled around. I was mostly a PC gamer anyway.
