Asymmetrical or symmetrical sticks?
>>
Top symmetrical (Wii U, Wii U Pro, Steam Deck, Steam Controller 2)

Asymmetrical (GameCube, Xbox)

Bottom Symmetrical (PlayStation, Logitech)

These are the rankings and there's no discussion.

He's right, top Symmetrical is the way to go.

Playstation layout for fighting games, sidescrollers, JRPGs and anything else that uses dpad inputs as the primary
Xbox for shooters, racers and 3D action games

Asymmetrical for modern games, symmetrical for retro. They should be swappable.

Sorry bud, but the touchpads are on the bottom and the sticks are on the top. Top Symmetrical.

I actually find it easier to play them on a symmetrical scheme

The raw and unfiltered TRVTH is, it really doesn't matter. Both are good and it's just preference and tribal bullshit where your side is mostly determined by which one you grew up with.
Once you realize this, you can swap between them depending on platform and not even notice.
Though, In terms of the actual controllers, symmetrical wins because it has Steam Controller and Dualshock4/sense and asymmetrical has xslop and Nintendo. But again, this isn't due to the merit of the shape itself as that's largely irrelevant, but due to the 2 technologically superior controllers incidentally being symmetrical.
>>
>>737703608
>Steam Controller 2
The trackpads make it look like it's top symmetrical. When you see people actually holding it, it's basically the same as a Playstation controller
>>
I've only used playstation until i also got a series x . There's not much difference and i don't give a shit about the dpad because i don't play baby games.

The transition from R1 and L1 to using triggers(R2 and L2) for the PS4 was more annoying than sticks placement.
>>
>>737703256
There's no way you can convince me that the analog positioning on the left isn't for anyone other than a disabled person.

Calling steam controller 2 "top symmetrical" is a stretch.
The stick centers are about level with the bottom edge of the dpad and face buttons.

either, you get used to them easily
>>
>>737703256
The left analog stick and the 4 face buttons are the important parts of the controller and should thus be on the upper part of the controller.
The PS controller just looks the way it does because it was designed without the analog sticks, which then just got tacked on.

I'm very smart and always correct.

I used to only like symmetrical controllers but then I played a lot of 3D games on a comfy assymmetrical controller and started loving them.
So now my answer is both depending on what you're playing.

depends on the game for me
i like the ps4 controller for turnbased rpgs/menu heavy games because of the dpad placement
i like the 8bitdo pro 2 for ps1 and older games because of the style of the dpad
i like the switch pro/2 controller for more action based games or movement heavy because of the stick placement on the left (xbox controllers work too)
i like the gamecube pro controller when i can make use of how tight the stick is and the stick notches are sick too
i like the steam controller for small games that use a mouse and i feel like sitting back in my chair and not use kb+m
and finally kb+m for fps games, fightstick for fightan
it's cool to have a bunch of controllers and switching between them all depending on what i play

It doesn't matter at all. They are both functionally identical and you gain/lose nothing by moving them. All that matters is they are within reach of the thumbs comfortably.

>>
>>737712652

Objectively. And my current controller is asymmetrical.
>>
>>737712362
lmao anon's tips are touching
what a fag
>>
>>737703256
After using both a lot, I have to say asymmetrical is better because you're able to hit the dpad with your right hand easily, a huge bonus in a lot of games. That said, controllers like the 360 that put the stick too high up are godawful.
>>
Asymmetrical, and specifically on a Gamecube style controller.
Opinions abound, but that one always felt best in my hands, way better than everyone trying to copy the Xbox.
>>
>>737713217
>Gamecube style controller
Gamecube controller fucking sucks, why the fuck would anyone willingly use it? Stockholm syndrome after playing Melee?
>>
>>737713539
NTA but it's a great controller, there's a reason Nintendo continued to support it on every console since.
>>
>>737710089
>doesn't matter at all
On PS controllers up to/including the DualShock 3, the sticks being symmetrical and too close together made it so your thumbs could easily bump against each other and impede your inputs if you pushed both sticks toward the middle.
DS4 onward fixed this, but Xbox and Nintendo avoided it entirely
>>
>>737703256
Is this a real issue for people with baby hands? Is it just console wars autism? I've used plenty of both and never had a problem with either.
>>
>>737713539
I liked the way my fingers wrap around the prongs and the curve to the shoulder buttons.\
The way Xbox and Switch Pro controllers feel, it's like they don't want my free fingers around it.
It's like holding a gun that isn't right for your hands. Sure it might be fine for other folk, but this other one is better for me.
>>
>>737703256
Symmetrical. Asymmetrical is retarded.
>>
>>737703608
Top Symmetrical - Outer (Wii U, Wii U Pro)
Top Symmetrical - Inner (Steam Deck, Steam Controller 2)
Asymmetrical (GameCube, Xbox, Switch)

Bottom Symmetrical (PlayStation, Logitech)

>>737703256
Asymmetrical for 3D games, symmetrical for 2D games. This is the only correct answer.
>>
>>737703256
i like symmetrical a bit more but the xbox360 controller is my favorite feeling of all time. Everything after feels fucked up and uncomfortable with the shoulders mostly
>>
>>737720069
When I return to the 360 controller, I can't help but strongly dislike the giant battery pack hump and the bottom corners of it digging into your fingers.
A wired one would take care of this, but official ones are rare and expensive, and I don't trust cheap 3rd party mimics to be any good

Only good symmetrical sticks are SteamDeck/Steam Controller and the Wii U Pro controller. Otherwise asymmetrical is king.
>>
>>737703256
symmetrical because back when i used to play. a shit ton of monster hunter world i could claw it so i can keep moving while selecting my items, same deal with dark souls. that said ive also used asymmetrical and it was fine, i just prefer the ability to claw
>>
>>737703256
Symmetrical; this was solved right at the beggining.
>>
>>737712903
>There is nothing objective about it
He's right and this is why; the top“half of the controller is where the pressure is exherted therefore its what triggers the balance, it's naturally in the place where the force from the front is met with the force from the back leading to the controller feeling solid in your hands when you're playing.

This is why asymmetrical is bad: they change the d-pad to the lower half of the controller and since the d-pad was designed for precision your strenght fuck over the weight balance on your controller. This is why 3DS feels terrible to play with d-pad; you're not adding force at the weight center.
>>
>>737703256
I grew up with Playstation so my brain is wired for symettrical. I can use both, tho. Just have a slight preference. But enough about me liking men.
>>
>>737713539
>why the fuck would anyone willingly use it?
Extremely intuitive button layout when at use despite the odd look. Also; those lovely 2 contact triggers
>>
>>737703256

>>
>>737724765
Fun fact: This controller was called at Sega as the Spielberg.
>>
>>737713539
It's actually super comfortable to hold. The opposite of the DualShlock.
>>
>>737720965
I tried the original splatoon on switch and I found it to be pretty bad to be honest. Like there's not exactly a lot of strategy involved in painting a map versus taking angles in counterstrike or something.
>>
>>737724857
They're both comfortable but the GC had the surprise factor for it. Thinking about it, Nintendo has been really good at that; I recall the Wii U gamepad being really light while really ergonomic at the same time.
>>
>>737724886
play ranked mode, no one takes the normal turf war mode seriously unless theyre a redditor who cries about spawncamping
>>
>>737703256
for any game where you actually want to use the sticks constantly, asymmetrical is the only answer. symmetrical is a way better setup for dpad games.
>>
>>737725360
Why?
If you are using BOTH STICKS constantly, why is having one up high and one down low a "good" thing?
>>
I prefer the xbox one feels better in the hand more tasteful thickness but I didn't learn it until much later since I chose ps over xbox
>>
>>737725528

>>
>>737725528
its just a more comfortable setup imo, though its not a big enough deal for me to not play a game with a certain type of controller. i played fps games with a ps controller for years despite preferring the xbox controller for them.

I find if an analog stick is too high up, its makes constant thumb movement more uncomfortable, then again my thumbs are properly opposed and form a natural "C" shape between the thumb and index finger
