What was it like owning one of these?
>>
considering that I always see the same 5-10 games (that had 1-2 remakes/remasters each) mentioned all the time nobody actually played shit on it
>>

it was like owning a magical artifact, i'm not even joking
>>
>>737714042
mine broke and I've had a grudge against Sony ever since

I remember constantly doing the gamestop rental trick and eventually getting banned for it. Played a whole damn lot of games that way.

My dad would return games to the store and say we didn't it didn't have the disc inside so we could get an extra copy for free for my cousin lol

playing ac4 on a crt is something else
>>
>>737714042
This thing made me feel things I have yearned for ever since and haven't felt anything like it since. Every single game you bought you played through. No updates, no installing, just pop in and play and everytime you did, you had a good time.
It was a time when videogames were actual videogames with scores, secrets, strategies and other stuff instead of the cookie cutter cinemaslop or competetive esports of today.

this is the equivalent of asking how do people drink water. how did you not have a ps2, retard

>What was like owning the most powerfull game console + having a DVD reader in 2000
I felt like a god. Started my DVD movie collection back then.
Just like owning a PS3 in late '00 (started my blu-ray movie collection back then)
Just like today is owning a PS5Pro (started my 4K movie collection).
Best games, best movies, best comfy experience. Sony always win.

>>737714042
like owning a piece of the future, just the startup alone made my jaw drop.

I never gave my away.
But overall, the early 2000s was THE golden age of vidya. Optimistic, magical, and each year was more revolutionary than the previous one.

Gaming and the internet was still a relatively niche "nerds' thing", and they didn't follow you everywhere you went 24/7.

You had to be a child, first and foremost. It was like christmas. Late zoomers don't even know what it's like to get a new console and just go "Holy shit, I've never seen games look so good before". I remember begging my mom and making myself fake-cry until she kowtowed after many weeks, and we went to EB Games and bought one. Then my dad haggled for a cheaper Memory Card because he told the clerk he had seen it cheaper in another store and they just let us reduce the price lol.
I got it with Rayman 3, and went back home to play PS2 for the first time.

Then I went to a friend's who had GTA Vice City. And I got a Demo Disc with ICO, Rayman 3 demo, and Jak & Daxter and Dark Cloud on it.
The next game I really hyped up was Jak II Renegade. And what a monumental game it was.

Then I played the Ratchet & Clanks at the end of the console cycle, and almost wasn't ready to shift to PS3 when it came out. It was also too expensive so I didn't have one for 2 years because I had to save up.

Gen 6 while not perfect felt like the last era where companies made games for gamers and not just profit. Like they were willing to make new IPs and new things instead of just focusing on one's that sell.

i didn't have the money to buy _every_ single ps2 experience that received praise back then, and as a kid i was also not that interested in too many of them because they weren't always seen as instant classics immediately. your collection was likely a patchwork of things (You) wanted as well as things you could just get, get on sale, and fucked around with. i imagine it was much the same for the majority of people who had the ps2.

eg if you were a fifa or sportsball kid you prob had a stack of those games but also one or more of picrel in there because your dad or older brother wanted to play it.

it probably helped fuel piracy a bit because the dvd player didn't give a fuck if it was burned

My grandpa was subscribed to playstation magazine, so he always had some new PS2 demos when I stayed the night. It's how I first played games like Katamari and Total Overdose which I then begged my mom to buy at home lol.
>>
>>737714147
Why would anyone mention playing nfs carbon or hitman contracts on PS2?
>>
>>737714042
It was like someone came from the future and dropped some badass shit on your lap and then left. It was fuckin awesome also I got one for $75 because my dad's friend worked too much to game so he sold it to us with a couple games. Same dude let me work with him one night plowing snow and I made enough money to start my first PC build. Fuckin awesome guy I hope he's doing alright nowadays
>>
>>737714042
It was pretty cool, lots of great variety, I loved the 3D platformers the most.
I think the piracy scene got a little better over the years, wasn't there some Japanese software that got modified to run ISOs?
>>
Man I miss life before companies figured out how to squeeze every little bit of value out of every fucking thing
>>
>>737714042
I still own a PS2 and am currently playing FFX on it for the first time ever in 2026. I'm on that road after fighting the Chocobo Eater thing.
>>
>>737714042
It unlocked the ability to rent lots of mid games at the video store, and if you were like me and were privileged enough to own the broadband adapter you could rent the ones with an online mode and try them all for free. Other than that it was better to have a Gamecube in pretty much every way I can imagine, including online gaming since PSO > everything
>>
>>737720915
If someone liked Gamecube more than PS2 you knew they were a gay outcast there's never been a more revealing system preference since then.
>>
>>737721098
Nah I'm cool and smart

I was a stupid fucking kid in its golden era, but still enjoyed Twisted Metal, Choro Q, & San Andreas on it when I wasn't playing PC. Favorite console next to the Wii.

Xbox 360 had more stuff, but even as a retarded kid the larger amount of visible shovelware and the gall of a company to ask you to pay for a subscription to play online when I literally had a fucking internet connection made me see it as a pittance compared to the PS2, and the only time I enjoyed the Xbox on a similar level was when I was locked in a room with nothing else for 2 months.
>>
>>737714042
You actually owned your games and it didn't force you to have to check in every 30 days or lose them.
>>
>>737714308
easy to fix most of the time. all you need is a screwdriver
>>
>>737722362
ps2 disc reader was designed to be easily adjustable. there is a little plastic cog you can spin to adjust the elevation of the laser and you can adjust the laser itself with 2 screws. usually just moving it a bit higher when the laser starts to weaken is enough. just open the case and spin it a bit higher until it reads ps1 discs and then adjust a few times until it reads ps2 as well. generally don't even need to calibrate the laser itself

Well to be honest anon it was just like the ps3, ps4, and ps5. Just a bunch of rpgs and movie slop.
>>
>>737714042
awesome. being able to jump to chapters in movies without ff or rewind was huge, plus all the extras and fact it fit on a single disc.
>>
>>737722583
there's a cog for games and another for dvds so best make sure you know which is which
>>
>>737714042
Awesome. Remember this thing came out when DVDs were becoming the norm, and for alot of people this was there first movie player. Having a two in one console was almost unheard of
>>
>>737725119
Not even black, you have to remember back then everybody fucking hated Gamestop for killing off/taking over other video game retailers and constantly pushing for stupid bullshit everywhere to the point that waiting at the DMV was a better customer experience by comparison.
>>
>>737716595
back then I was a nintendo fag, but once I made friends with xbox and PS2 and we lent each other games I realized how stupid it was to fight when we had such amazing games to share. absolutely nothing recent has come close to the peak everything reached during this era, be it music, games, shows or movies
