Have a payoff that separates the Painters from the Painted, but do so in a way where both sides are left with loss they have to mourn, while acknowledging that for the first time both get to move forward with what they have left. Don't tell me the clearly sentient people of the canvas all have to die at the eleventh hour as a botched metaphor for escapism.
