I beat it, enjoyed it (despite the final Act shitting the bed in terms of pacing), and now I'm wondering if there's any other strategy games that scratch the same itch in terms of letting you develop and equip your party in any number of interesting ways.

Unless you played them already there is the original Baldur's Gate games. Granted they are quite different gameplay wise. Dragon Age: Origins is another beloved game that provides a similar experience I would say.

Did you even bother playing BG1 and 2?

Pathfinder games although they're nowhere near close BG3 quality

Is Solasta any good?

Might give BG2 another go but was turned off by it not being turn-based.

I loved DA Origins but wouldn't say the combat leaves room for half as much experimentation

It’s very linear compared to BG3. The role playing elements are somewhat present but lacking. You make all the player characters yourself so you also kind of have imagine their story and motivations. Combat is more closely in line with regular 5e but some liberties are still taken. Where I think Solasta stands out is in how ambitiously it implements the third dimension. Flight is actual flight, allowing you to end your turn midair. Likewise you can angle a lightning bolt upwards to hit that nasty flyer, or have your fireball detonate in midair like a firework. It’s wonky to use but I appreciate the attempt.

I enjoyed Solasta and I’m eagerly awaiting Solasta 2.

Does it actually have quests and the like or is it pretty story light in comparison?

You follow a main quest with some optional side-missions sprinkled in. The main quest will always play out pretty much the same way.

One advantage it has is that they released tools to make custom campaigns so there’s a lot of potential content though quality varies.
