FFVII was a game about Nomura wanting to do a more "modern" setting than the previous six Final Fantasy entries, but he still had to fall back on the same tropes of mysticism and cosmic entities and bullshit that made it impossible to weave into the opening about eco terrorists. We really didn't need all the crap with Jenova when "super soldiers chimp out as a last resort to save the world from itself" could have worked just fine.
