As a 2000 Zoomer the equivalents for us were the DS in general, Mario Galaxy, Flash Games, easily available Online Multiplayer on consoles, 2000s blitz of good Star Wars games, Skyrim, and Minecraft.
The 6th gen basically solved how video game were played up to today and the graphical shift between the 6th and 7th was to gradual to matter much for a young kid, meaning that their was little wow factor, and the great genre die off in favor of Gun & Ball games fucked up a lot of kids chance to enjoy varied games.
But holy fuck the moment of having a tech day at school and seeing half your 3rd grade class show up with their DS's and play a massive Mario Kart race was great.
Really outside of Skyrim the biggest shift from the 90s gaming besides the games themselves were that most of the iconic games barring Skyrim were multiplayer in focus.

My last shared memory of gaming with him was when I finally pulled off a Fatality in MKII as Baraka. I went running to find him in the kitchen and tell him about it and he was happy for me but that was the last time we did anything gaming wise together. Pretty sure he was in his mid 30s by then and just didn't care anymore.

My father always bought us games in the 16 bit era. Had a bunch of Genesis and SNES games. Was very cash. He also had really good taste for picking bangers (Sonic 2, Super Mario World, NBA Jam, Street Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat, Link to the Past).

He went on a bit of a gaming kick himself when the Playstation came out since 3D graphics were mind blowing at the time and the games were more adult focused. I remember watching him play the first 3 Resident Evil games, because I was too scared to play them. Much later he got into playing CoD Ghosts and we would take turns playing online matches. Very good memories.

Best way I can describe the magic of 90's and early 00's gaming is that it felt like video games wanted to be something "more". When you play games now you pretty much already know what to expect: You know what genre it is, you know what the controls will be like, you know how the RPG systems will work etc. This wasn't the case for video games back then, things weren't figured out yet, there was this hunger to be the next step in video games. This meant a lot of failed experimentation and "what the fuck were they thinking?" sure, but you also got some goddamn mind blowing shit.

01 zoomer here. Neither of my parents fucked with vidya but my dad was a drug dealer who would go and stomp out other drug dealers and customers that owed him money. If they couldn't pay with cash, he would sometimes take their consoles and vidya and hock them off to me as payment. It was mostly sports and racing games though. It wasn't until later that I started playing games I chose. Until then though, I was given a steady stream of older 90s and 00s titles. Made me a bona fide SEGA kid. The earliest game I remember playing was Max Payne back in 03 on the XBOX, I could even set up the power and RCA cables at 2.

I also consider myself very fortunate to grow up in a family that shared vidya. Even my grandparents and mother would play shit like Tetris, Dr. Mario, and Othello on the family NES kek. Loved watching my dad and uncle(he was young enough to be like a cool older brother) play rpgs. We'd play Contra, Streets of Rage, Twisted Metal, and some other games together too.
My best friend down the road had a N64, so we had the best of all worlds. His dad fixed up and sold computers as a side gig and would bring home different games to try all the time. Got my first taste of rts there w/ Warcraft I.
