Continued translator discussion thread. We actually were having some interesting conversations for the first couple hundred posts before it devolved into shitposting. Let’s continue our discussion. To get the ball rolling: post some examples of localizations you thought were actually done well. For me it’s Unicorn Overlord. It carries the meaning of the JP script pretty well for the most part while making dialogue more flowery and interesting

What faggy games are you guys playing

The first Trails game had a good localization even though it was largely fan fiction. I fell in love with Estelle as a kid because of it

the spice is...immaculate...

just learn the language or fuck off, I don't know what point is proven when I skim these threads, they just shit up the 'loggy. If AI is so much better just use it, when you just make endless whining threads I think you're trying to prove something to yourself instead of helping people play a game correctly

What’s stopping chuds from just taking a picture of every line of dialogue and running it through claude if they want their precious 1:1 so bad?

How do you do fellow revolutionaries, are we ending fascism today as well?

>that would have been retarded and potentially have distracted from the meaning
How so? Presumably a character speaking in archaic/formal Japanese would have the same effect of possibly needing to engage higher-level language parsing in a Japanese viewer, as archaic/formal English would in an English viewer. That would be a good translation in my book.
>>
>previous thread devolves into retardation and shitposts
>new thread is just immediate shitposting
Amazing, never change /v/
>>
>>737731117
maybe, but you run into a slippery slope with that. its easier to just match the meaning as direct as you can, with a note for context. trying to match the same "energy" and "vibes" is part of how we got into this mess as the first place.
>>
>>737731263
maybe don't make retarded arguments if you don't want anons to make fun of them?
>>
>>737731346
I didn't
>>
Bro I don't need to explain shit to you, you do the equivalent of shitting in my cereal, claim your fart is nuanced and I wouldn't understand it and then expect me to argue in good faith? I want you fucking dead and buried 20 feet under, preferably after I fry your bones.

I really don't get why anon took issue with >>737726098

>all translation is localization if you think about it!
who cares?
>>
>>737731693
That's not what the post says
>>
>>737731724
the post is either completely irrelevant, or hostile depending on the intentions of the poster
all anons want is for translations in japanese media to be handled like any other work, translated as directly as possible with additional notes for context or nuance. like how a good fansub would handle it.
>>
>>737730710
There is already bepinex auto translate for unity games, which changes the ingame text. There are others too, AI translations are improving rapidly.
>>
>>737731293
It's easier to just learn the language if you need that level of understanding
>>
>>737732039
wow, its almost like engaging with media from a different culture has you gradually learn more about that culture and even developing an appreciation for that culture, up to and including learning parts of the language, and trying to whitewash foreign cultures away is a bad thing. who'da thunk?
>>
>>737731934
Okay, and I agree with that sentiment fully. So what the fuck was with all the shitposts? Retards just made up their own conclusions on shit I never said.
>>
>>737732107
There's a difference between whitewashing cultures away and turning every translation into a school lesson
>>
>>737732312
japanese is not so complicated that every line needs to have a footnote attached to it. just translate normally. its so easy an AI could do it. and for those rare cases where it truly can't be conveyed in English...just explain the context through a note.
>>
>>737732480
If the notes are reserved for rare cases, they should focus more on leaving it as-is and having it make sense in context, let people look it up if they need to know the fine details.
Like someone being called "Aniki"; it doesn't mean anything to an english speaker, but seeing as he's calling someone it, it's probably some kind of title or nickname, so keep it in the subs. Culture is kept intact, and it makes sense without needing to know exactly what's going on.
>>
>>737732995
Yeah, you're right. And also its a lot less of a problem these days because you can look up these terms easily if you get confused.
You learn a lot of vocabulary from just paying to attention to what they're saying anyhow.
>>
amerimutt localizations are so fucking verbose too
>>
>JP: this is bad...
>EN: OH NO OH NO OH NO I CAN'T BELIEVE IT, I TOLD YOU THIS WAS A BAD IDEA!!!!
>>
>>737735109
>JP:If you can get some fuel canisters, then I can reactive the main generator and get our shields back up. I marked the objective on your map
>EN:Heyyyy buddy, great job killing all those mutants and all. You're really good at that! Shooting things, that is. One problemo though, as it turns out a bunch of monsters on the planet are gonna tear our eyes out if we don't get the shield back up. And this is just my opinion, but that's gonna suck. Not having eyes sounds terrible! Like, how am I supposed to read my collection of "Bodacious Space Babes" without any flippin' eyeballs? So here's my brilliant plan that I got written on this here napkin. There's this generator-thing. You following me? And it needs GAS! Who knew? So mayyybe, you can go out and fetch some canisters. And then we can get the generator running, and then the shield will go back up, and we won't get horribly viciously murdered! Doesn't that sound great? I know, right? So, since I did most of the work coming up with the plan, I was thinking you can do the last step and get the cannisters. If you see any monsters, shoot them in the face or something. Oh and one more tip: try not to get killed. That'll put a wrench in this plan- metaphorically that is. Not literally. I hate people who misuse the term "literally", it drives me FIGURATIVELY insane. Anyway I'll just be here, cowering in my bunker while you go do that. Go team badass!
