>>737733578Why do people still play old ass games like this? I can get going back to the 360 era but anything older than that is completely clunky dogshit that has been surpassed by newer games. >>737733578such a monumental waste of time and effort to code everything for these shitty results, I'm a PC gamer myself, been for most of my life, but I do not relate to this weird breed/subcategory of PC gamers at all and always found equality fascinating and horrifying where they must have all le ebin 4k, 8k, 16k output, must smooth out all the pixels and add some deep fried filters, must have all the textures, must use topaz gigapixel or whatever other upscaling bullshit, must have le ebin reshade preset that completely fucks up the artstyle, must have the 300 visual mods that all clash with each other but every stone texture is 6 gorillion pixels so it must be good right? must have all the crazy hooks and injectors into the game to force FSR, DLSS, XeSS or that lossless scale thing for maximum upscaling and frame generation, must inject and force gaytracing on even 20 year old games even if they were not design with it in mind at all producing some weird abominations, force tesselation on those motherfuckers, force all different techniques even if they make no sense, always more MORE MORE BECAUSE MORE IS ALWAYS BETTER, must have all le maximum graphix!!!!1111
>>737737923>NOBODY can have fun with Atari 2600/NESmaybe with the 2600, but the NES has tons of great games
i recently designed a tile-based graphics digital circuit that is somewhere in power between the NES and SNES. i also wrote an emulator to debug the design. i want to turn it into an electronics kit people can assemble. time seems ripe for that sort of thing.
>>737733664The reality is actually that SMW was a massive downgrade from SMB 3, and that SMB 3 mogs the shit out of every subsequent 2D Mario game.

>>737739762it can be done with snes9x. it would just require a full rewrite because snes9x is cpu based.anyway super zsnes is going to be doing a lot more than just what the op image is showing. that's an example of basic-level shit it's capable of.that said, the major stuff that it will be capable of won't be available out-of-box. it'll require modders to actually make them. that's what super zsnes really is. it's basically a modder's toolbox to do new things and easily create graphics hacks with a built-in universal graphics editor, including being able to convert mode 7 to mostly full 3d. all without the need of hard to use, specialized romhacking tools that require a game to have been reverse engineered first.there's talk of potentially being able to make your own hd2d-like edits, or at the very least pixel remaster-like edits of games with this thing down the line.
>>737737923>being filtered by zelda 2 in 2026yikes
How do I into retroarch on linux? I am too retarded to set it up
>>737739953runtime-edits are a cake walk on something like the NES. that's because the way memory was laid out one could, say, edit CHAR-ROM and see the effect immediately. i loved doing this on nesticle while playing games.however, the SNES's VRAM allows for more creative and dynamic use of memory that makes nesticle-like edits not really feasible for lots of games. character data is often times decompressed then loaded dynamically as needed. even if you did edit VRAM, the game would likely overwrite the changes immediately. also, a lot of the power of the SNES derives from shit like it's HDMA feature, which lets graphics registers be modified on a per-scanline basis. this makes it a lot harder to just, say, open up a view of VRAM and edit what's there in an attempt to manipulate the screen.

>>737733664>I can get going back to the 360 era but anything older than thatObvious shitposting aside, I wonder if there's anything like objective lines when it comes to this or if it's all relative, i.e. "I can get going back to the [insert the era when you first started playing games] but anything older than that..."You will never catch me playing anything from the Atari era, because the games look like dogshit to me. For the NES era I think the only game I would willingly sit down and play is Contra. However the SNES era I find perfectly charming and visually appealing and would gladly go back and play something there without reservations. Is this because it's more or less where my gaming journey started, or is there a general consensus that this is where games had gotten "good enough" regardless of your age?I suppose the line for 3D games might be different too. I've come to love the very specific, pixelated, dithered look of the PSX, but I have trouble with the N64 games.

>>737745068snes9x has basic filters that have been around for a long time; they aren't comparable to the modern shader stuff at all
>>737740571I had an atari and atari is still objectively garbage. The few games that are fun enough to play have arcade version which are superior.Asteroids and Lunar Lander are incredibly simple but I haven't played anything that has the same momentum in movement.Genetos is a tribute to shooters (renamed shoot em ups). Each level goes through a new generation of the genre. So that's better than just playing the oldest ones.Likewise for 3d N64 is objectively fucking terrible. The games are some of the best ever but they all need to be remade to incorporate dual stick camera control. Analog stick has never felt right emulated.Blast Corps has nothing like it. Other games at least have spiritual successors if not direct sequels.

Replaying SMW made me realise how much Mario Wonder level design kinda sucks. I mean it's not bad in a "just have fun" kinda way but there are hardly any falls in the levels and it's mostly flat surfaces which is weird for a platformer, a genre all about jumping over pits and onto platforms. The Wonder transformations are fun as fuck but really more care should have gone into the level design.
