Now that the dust has settled what's the /v/erdict on octopath 0? What did it do wrong? Is it a good game? Should gacha games go this route?
i played about 70% of the game and then never finished itit was okay
>>737736380never finished it so idk
Japanese developers are incapable of having RPGs where story elements are dynamic or interact with each other.
>>737736710Finish it now, anon.
too big
I won’t play it until they add Solistia as dlc
>>737736380Was good. For 3 I would like a game like 2 but an ending story arch like 0. You have to play and finish all 8 charcters archs and then the big evil is more than one super fight, but a whole (shorter) journey.
>>737736380Didnt finish it yet, i liked ot1 and ot2 is one of my fav jrpg ever but i found 0 to be pretty boring and unengaging>too many characters for its own good>the mix and match jobs actions and passives is super limited>this results in the fights being all the sames all the time from lvl 10 to 40 (didnt play past that yet but dont see how that would change)>ost is massive rehash from the past 2 gamesIt’s a shame cuz the few new tracks are lit and the villains are harvey level of great. But yeah overall not bad, just boring and too long for that gameplay loop.
>>737741917>the mix and match jobs actions and passives is super limitedYes, but later there are some really broken and fun ones. The cat can hit 99999 without a buff from a supporter fairly easy. Only for bosses you have to get your support up and running.I played one chapter a day and that kinda save me to play through it all. It's too much.
>>737736380I never finished the first one cause I hate grinding
>>737736380i played it a few times and then never came back to itit was okay though, i'm definitely not gonna continue because it's been so long i'd have to start from the beginning to remember what was going on or how to play and i'm definitely not doing thatbut for a few sessions it's alright
>>737742892Grinding is fun anon
Singlehandedly killed any faith I've had in the franchise, abysmal dogshit not even worth beating. Octopath 0 has gameplay that abandons everything the previous games set, such as dynamic difficulty and player agency. It is only after half the game that you begin to unlock some new abilities and tools that actually help you out, but why wait half the game for mechanics you could do in all of the other games far sooner? There is also no Job system, a staple of the series, because there are too many lifeless husks of playable characters that do not serve the plot or have any real reason to exist and could have been cut instead. The new characters as expressive and interesting as a brick wall. The recruitable party members are dogshit DEI-consulted Californian garbage that are completely unlike the designs in the previous 3 games (1, 2, and CotC). The playable characters in CotC were at least tolerable, for the most part, just needing an actual story to follow and not lifeless gacha bullshit. 0 would have been the perfect way to do this, but no, they had to create a new characters with different designs from the standard European adventurer theme the series is set in. Instead of having a billion uninteresting gay retards adventuringOctopath 0 manages to take the steaming pile of mid that was the series' gacha game Champions of the Continent and somehow make it worse, not fixing the problems with that game's story and instead leaving it how it is, while failing to compensate with interesting characters and great combat. The series is about travelers, ordinary people with no "chosen one" prophecy or some god telling them they need to go on a quest, it's regular people on a small-scale adventure for something far more personal, and far more interesting to be attached to. A generic RPG plotline is not what the series needs, it is corny slop like a lot of other RPGs out there, and no interesting characters to even make the slop palatable like the other RPGs out there.
>>737742892If you didn't fast travel the whole game, and instead manually went everyone on foot like God intended, you would be able to get through the whole game without ever grinding, for you fought all the fights you needed on your adventure already.
>>737746293>to never have to grind you have to spend the whole game grindingi'm good

>>737736380>0Isn't that the gacha ported to PC?
I haven't even tried it because I'm not a fan of townbuilding stuff
>>737748467It’s the gacha that was turned into a real game
>>737736380I loved the first 2, but could never finish because I'm too retarded to tactic my way through the final bosses that I'm convinced level scale because I tried grinding like a motherfucker and still got my shit packed inWhat was the deal for 0 again compared to 1 and 2? I don't remember. I might get a used physical copy if it seems worth it
>>737748610It’s actually pretty comfy
>>737748113What’s dei about that image?
>>737736380it's genuine trash. you can tell the writing team for CotC were the bottom of the barrel at squeenix, and given full rein to make some complete bullshit. mid character designs, orsterra is somehow MUCH worse than the original, gameplay is more cheesable than ever, although the customization is nice. it somehow also has the gacha powercreep problem and units powerspike the further you get into the game, as if this wasn't a fully priced video game that required none of that. by far the worst in the series and i hope they trash everything related to it when they make 3
>>737736380you can really feel the piecemeal additions from the content being a repackaged gacha that was updated over years rather than a focused package. but the story is kino, so I can forgive that. the combat is completely and casually broken and the decision to keep the damage cap break passive rather than just increasing it is baffling. mid-late game suffers the most from it becauae money quickly stops being a problem when you shit out 100k money bomb ults every encounter. or reime hitting 50k x4 on a non-ult skill.
>>737746127>The new characters as expressive and interesting as a brick wall.This. Why the fuck did they forego adding the original CotC 8 for these losers?

>>737736380why do young japanese devs not dream of evolving the genre? When it's done it's so minimal. I guess they never saw it as an rpg in the first place.
>>737759309isnt the issue all the 100 year old executives who dont want change but are also 5 years behind when trendchasing?Japanese indie games are very creative
>>737736380I haven't played 0 but i did beat CotC. It's so good
>>737760823you can beat a gacha game?
>>737745628>>737746293My time is too valuable to bother with that, I also never bought any equipment cause everything is too expensive, JRPGs will never be as succesful as something like COD cause they think every gamer is a NEET, until they learn this they will keep losing money
>>737736380It was alright. Having absolutely zero knowledge of the gacha means that I took the story at face value (as I'd wager 80+% of people did) and while some stories were certainly better than others, the overall package was fine. There are some very odd decisions (like only Olberic having Surpassing Power, why have we not moved past this ability yet?) but I still had a good time playing the game. The ending(s) were a bit of a wet fart because I really couldn't bring myself to care too much about the main cast outside of Bargello and the Wishvale cast, but the fanservice of having literally everybody see you off with voiced lines made me smile anyway. I'm easy.Having watched a video on what was changed/excised, I certainly have some more opinions on that but I think they did an okay job of things FOR THE MOST PART. Making an entire second map and only using a quarter of it in 0, if even, was a particularly interesting choice. Somewhat surprised that they didn't release collab characters as DLC, considering they already had everything for them ready and it'd by an easy sell.I don't particularly care if more gachas go this route as I was only interested in this having played the prior games. I guess I might play an FFRK offline release, if that happens. Can't think of any others.
>>737761046There are some gacha games like CotC and Another Eden that are basically just normal games but with gacha and autistic post-game content for whales
0 was fine. It just felt a bit bloated and superficial because of all the recruitable characters.
>>737761282speaking of Another Eden, that is actually getting an offline version too, but its coming in chunkshttps://store.steampowered.com/app/4163960/Another_Eden_Begins/
>>737748174In a perfect world females like her would be the main love interests, unfortunately we live in a homosexual world.
>>737736380So what's the deal with this shit? It's supposed to be an offline version of the gacha game, but the gacha is still active and pumps out content. How much of the gacha did this game adapt if you compare it to the current gacha content?
>>737761974My knowledge of the gacha is a bit limited, but I believe there are two seperate 'Acts' to the gacha. Each taking place on different continents, the first being in OT1's Orsterra and the second being on OT2's Solistia. 0 is the first 'Act' which is completed, and is considered to be the canon version events of CotC insofar as the world itself is concerned. The second 'Act' might get its own 0 one day which canonizes its events later down the line now that they've settled on a precedent, but that's likely dependent on how well 0 does.
>>737761707Ah yes i forgot about this. The gacha game is also on PC. I wonder how much they will change
>>737762279I see, also what does CotC stand for?
>>737762658Champions of the Continent, that's the name of the gacha.
>>737761753Fr
>>737762279No side Solistia is a whole different story. OT0 is the main story of the gacha. They also got a story with Cait sages
>>737761469This. It really shows it’s gacha roots here
>>737736380Every octopath game has sucked
>>737739334A dynamic story cannot tell the most dramatic possible outcome because the player can be a dudebrobrain and meddle with it by acting like an idiot.
>>737736380It's okay, I guess. The only thing that really pissed me off with the game are the arbitrary limitations on the amount of props you can put in the town you build. That and the immovable buildings, and the tiny build area at the very bottom of the map where the immovable workshop is. And the inability to chage the style of the bridge you cross to get into the town proper. And the lack of landscaping tools. And the maddening decision to make walls props instead of a seperate catoegory of items that can be placed freely. In fact most of my gripes is with how limiting the townbuilding is.The last boss battle where you basically have to level cap all characters, equip them with gear that specifically min/max's them, and then assign them to parties that has at least one healer in each front/back row is annoying too.
>>737767671OT2 is a masterpiece
>>737736380I think overall it's the best one, but I do miss the apothecary's mix ability. And I guess Champion of the Content came out before OT2, but OT0 does have a little worse visual flare to it than OT2. But other than that, it's an objective improvement overall.

>>737736380I couldn't get into OT at all. In the first game I really only care about Primrose's revenge plot but having to swap around the party to do the other main stories was a chore, especially trying to balance out all the equipment.

What’s the appeal of these games
>>737774820Get stronger, make number go up, pixel art, minor kino (Primrose's scenario in 1, Auguste's stuff and some Sazantos material in 0)
>>737774820Octopath, at is greatest, is about individual travelers going on classical adventures, but in a very grounded and endearing way. There is no world-ending threat, there is no prophecy, it's small-scale. One protagonist, H'aanit, is a huntress trying to track down a particular beast who bested her master. Another protagonist, Castti, is an apothecary with amnesia who is trying to remember her past. Temenos is a cleric inquisitor who is trying to solve a murder and unravels a cultist conspiracy. Each protagonist has a clear motive that drives them on an adventure, and their stories all have connected plots if you have a keen eye. However, the developers cannot seem to tie the plot together in a more direct way, as unfortunately party members do not interact much in a medium that encourages character interaction. It has its shortcomings, but is a charming series for its unique take on the genre, both in gameplay and in story.

>>737803419Yes I’ve heard people shit on it but it can’t be that bad
OT0 is good because it has an actual story. For OT3, they now need to combine what they did for 2 and 0. You first go through your party’s story, and then you have some meaty actual story after that, instead of cope duo quests or a super boss.
>>737762279It's actually more than that.Side Orsterra (done) is comprised of 2 main arcs: Master of - and Bestower of - aka most of the entire story of OT0Side Solistia (done) is about Sail (MC) with cameos of OT2 characters who basically go "You're a good person Sail, not a bad guy" ad nauseumThe Caits' story (done, I think)There's an upcoming new story called "The Unchosen Ones" as well but that's the gacha dragging along its heels at this point.

>>737817106That part is so stupid. You can tell the writers didn’t have a good reason to make her a guardian of light
>>737820719They wanted a villain redemption arc in the original CotC, but made a character that was literally just conquest incarnate as a hot mocha mommy. She legit had no motivation to convert aside from Rinyuu making her a bowl of soup and admitting to her that she's gonna an hero for Velnorte's soul. The forced shipping with Bargello was even more stupid. If it were me, the Groha would have rebelled against her for being a literal genocidal maniac for power and avenging their fallen comrades to her. It wouldn't be a redemption arc at that point since Aluane wouldn't have to beg her to join us, and maybe some actual character development would happen above "*sniff sniff* owo what's this? (it's death)".
>>737736710this but Octopath 1
>>737822740>we've got a black woman who wants to rule the world locked up>just make the black guy deal with her>this actually worksI was half expecting her to join the Family at the end of the game, which would have been equally as silly as letting her go and just keep conquering other fucking lands, seriously why did they just let her fucking go holy shit Alaune you fucking psychopath
>>737823742She is actually the worst written character in the entire story, winning against Oshka by a slight margin. Her main purpose in the game was to let the writers kill off her sister while still having a princess left to instantly just take her place, thus reducing the impact to zero. She becomes the paragon JRPG trope of "let's forgive everyone unconditionally because that's the right thing to do". How did that work out for Jesus? And then, the writers just have everything magically work out via just not addressing anything and moving to the next scenario.
>>737824193Hey now, I liked the BoW in the end. He sucked for 2/3rds of his chapters (while only really being present for one of those thirds, admittedly), but when he finally broke down in Chapter 3 and stopped pretending to be this big brained genius above it all and revealed himself for the petty bitch he is, I genuinely came to like the character. It's refreshing seeing such a single-minded spite, I don't think any other villain in the game has that bite to them. Helps he has the third best boss theme (behind the Sister and Auguste, respectively).
>>737824515Honestly, his dramatic breakdown wasn't enough to make up for that fact that his entire existence was to make Bargello (the pet character of the writers for some reason) look good. The entire Valore arc seemed really inconsequential to the overarching story since it was so self-contained and didn't result in much other than Bargello joining the guardians of light. But yeah you're absolutely right about the music, especially his final dungeon blasting your anus with a saxophone.
>>737825306Coming from purely playing 0 and never touching CotC, Bargello reminds me of a beta version of the Ringbearer.>has a town he cares about>it goes to shit>he rebuilds it with his pals>gets pulled along into way deeper shit that he never had any real reason to be a part ofIt works for a gacha where he can objectively be the main character of the Wealth stories while (You) are just one of his mooks, but in 0 where (You) are meant to be 'the guy', he's just clashing with you for main character space but it's not like they can wholly rewrite the stories by that point. But I still think it works because quite frankly the Valore crew are the only ones I cared about by the end, and he is a liferaft through BoA whenever the actual BoA isn't on screen. Think about it, the ringbearer has much more in common with a Mafia Boss while standing in a room of Kings and Queens.

>>737825306Why is Partitio so perfect?
>>737736380Should I play these in order
>>737803843The story in 0 sucks doe
>>737830913I think it depends on how much you really like these games and if you actually want to play them all. OT2 is largely an improvement overall (besides the characters unless you're a furfag), so it's kind of hard to go back to play OT1. OT2 deviates away from the whole 8 people roster and only 4 characters per battle, as well as changing the narrative structure pretty heavily while adding in town-building. I personally think OT2 improves the actual gameplay and party building tremendously from OT2, but the story I think is way overly dramatic in a bad way. And OT0 has like twice the amount of content as OT1 and 2 combined which is definitely a good thing if you enjoy the game overall, but you might not feel like going to those games after OT0 from just getting burnt out.
>>737832957>OT2* deviates away from the whole 8 people roster and only 4 characters per battle>I personally think OT2*I meant OT0 in both of these.
