The ending wasn’t that bad. And the game wasn’t “super short” either, which was often complained about in relation to the ending. The game makes a lot of strange creative decisions and definitely wasn’t exactly what people were hoping for, but the reaction to the ending was ridiculous.

I replayed the trilogy recently.
The ending is bad. It's basically at peak momentum and then abruptly cuts off like they literally just didn't finish the game.
It's not that bad now because you can just go straight to Halo 3 but it's still an awful ending to the video game Halo 2.

Nah, Halo 2's ending is the worst kind of cliffhanger. The last cutscene has Chief boarding the last Covenant ship and everything feels like it's building up to this awesome final mission, then it abruptly stops and rolls credits. The scene is hyping you up for that last mission but Bungie ran out of time and was forced to ship the game like that. It's worse than Evangelion's original "we ran out of money for colors" ending.

They should have at least included the warthog run where you make it onto the covenant ship that was cut from the game. And build a final level around that instead of the final level being a Arbiter level. Then I don't think people would have complained as much.

We got the full complete vision of Halo 2, additional levels, lighting engine, and all, but since the series is finished and Microsoft cannot lock Bungie down into a contract we never get Halo 3 and beyond.

My memories of Halo 3 multiplayer would say don't change a thing.
But in hindsight a more fleshed out Halo 2 would probably be preferable.
