Even when Klonoa 2 leant into it, you could feel how they weren't used to it. It doesn't help that the games are story focused, so a lot of Klonoa's antics are made to serve a narrative, and can't lean too hard on the rule of cool. You can feel that dissonance in the Kingdom of Sorrow, where they're trying to make moments of spectacle in what's meant to be a really empty place. The atmosphere is still incredibly strong in spite of this though.
