>armed like tanks in the earlier periods of the war>lightly armored but offers protection against handguns>used for scouting and marking targets for air support>screened flanks>better suited for urban combatwhy do games hate armored cars?
Because WW2 only had the Sherman, T-34, Tiger, P-51, Spitfire and Bf 109. No other vehicles than these poster children existed. That's why War Thunder became popular, because it showed that vehicles other than these six existed.
Normies only care about tanks
>>737760250Because armored cars are cool and 99% of games made today are focused on being as lame as possible
>the tank combat is tanks shooting other tanks
In most videogames armored cars are basically easy to kill, easy to spot vehicles that can spot better. Infantry hiding in bush does a better job of spotting while not getting killed since most games have telepathic armies that relay information instantly.
>>737760471it'd be nice if people recognised which things were important, rather than liking a load of literally who and/or fake vehicles
>>737760250I think the fact is that their role just isn't required in, or doesn't translate well to most games. The only games I can think of where armored cars can be utilized properly are things like ARMA, Gunner Heat PC, Steel Division 2, Graviteam Tactics and more serious war games where you have big maps, recon is important and the vehicles strengths/weakeness are better simulated, whereas most mainstream games maps just aren't big enough to warrant the increase in mobility vs a tank whilst being much weaker, and regular cars are just disposable transport to get infantry A-B quickly.
>>737763038coh has good armoured cars. the transports are still ass though
Armored cars are really fun in Foxhole, especially in early war.
>>737760250The sd kfz 222 and 234 are very good lookingthe sd kfz 232... ...not so much
>>737760250because most games with them they also serve alongside tankstherefore the devs must provide ample anti tank weapons to infantry to deal with vehiclesbecause tanks are around, the anti tank weapons must be suitably balanced to handle tanks most devs also ensure pretty much every single fucker on the map has ready access to one or at least there will always be one around these days to avoid upsetting the infantry players fee fees since armored cars are gonna be less armored and therefore have less HP they constantly get rekt by xxXmoistwetpoopypants_2007Xxx hiding in a bush with a bazooka stated/balanced/meant to kill shermans/panzers/t34s/those wacky tojo tanks/etc also add in the fact they get insta spotted as much as tanks 85-95% of the time by telepathic super soldiers who proceed to communicate its position to everyone on the map also devs tend to gimp their weapons as well to the point of being near useless on top of the aforementioned issues to the point you are better off getting out and shooting them with your primary than the turret in a lot of cases also a lot of maps are too small for them to make sense, they have to have maneuver room or else they are just shittier tanks and shittier transports
>>737760250because as you will see in some strategy games they quickly become useless the moment any one gets an actual tank on the fieldFor example in Gates of Hell I rarely use scout cars because every tank on the map will instantly hunt them down to shoot themTheir agility is good but there is only so much map for it to crossIf it was like real life then it would have actual utility but in current games they are mostly useless
>>737764375when I get stupid rich, this is one of the first vehicles I will buy
>>737760250>why do games hate armored cars?blame them
>>737760250>why do games hate armored cars?Because in the context of conventional game design they wouldn't make any sense. In real life tanks are faster because they can fit way bigger engines to carry all that armor and firepower. In a game the armored car would be faster with no drawbacks and a heavy machinegun or autocannon that still does damage to heavy armor for some reason because that's gaymer logic. Also no area specific damage so there's no drawback to taking out the tires with small arms either.TL;DR video games are gay and retarded.
>>737760250>tank is played by a single player controlling the turret and driving>some games come with a second player that can roleplay doing something with the optional machinegun>armored car or truck needs 2 players>you either have a retard driver or gunner >the other guy randomly exits the vehicle once you drive where they want.Same counts for transport chopper gunners.Funny enough World of Tanks has a scoutcar line thats both meta and has many fans. But they do not suffer the 2 player curse.
What is there to recon in games? You and everyone else knows the terrain, weather, even where the enemy mass is located. All that remains is some gimmick relaying targets so they popup on tank or artillery observer map.
>>737766290A Sherp for me please
>>737767509Tanks were often faster cross-country due to the nature of tracked vehicles but on roads and nice firm ground virtually all armoured cars smoked virtually all tanks in terms of speed and mobility, that's the whole reason everyone wanted armoured cars in real life.
>>737760250
What's the point of armored cars, doctrinally speaking?
>>737760250>Decent protection>Tiny for urban environments>Also has a turretIs there a modern equivalent? Every modern armoured vehicle I have seen is fuckhuge, this looks like it could actually traverse narrow roads.
>>737760250because video games don't operate on a scale where armoured scout cars are useful. the reason they exist is because real war fronts are hundreds of miles long, so there are huge tracts of land where the enemy is not only hidden but also debatably not even in the same time zone. so some way to quickly go out and try and find an enemy to engage is useful. by contrast, videogames rarely have maps bigger than a few square miles, so you're never 'out of conflict' for more than a minute or two. you always know where the enemy is. the scouting has already been done, you're not in the 'engagement' phase. the point in the battle where the scout cars have been retired and moved off to the next front. they're not made for open conflict, so having them in open conflict is just giving players a "tank, but worse"
>>737770315depending on time and place, scouting/recon, armored cavalry, flanking, screening mobile fire support for infantry, riot/worker/socialist/indian independence/union control
>>737770315cheaper, better range, faster
>>737770385some armies still field tankettes
>>737770607Close but not an armoured car, though I suppose it can do everything I mentioned aside from getting infantry around (Unless this thing is a clown car and fits a small squad).
>>737770607Any that have been in a serious fight in the last 80 years?
>>737770385Yes you have your typical Humvee, those that look like heavy armored buggies with a turret or those that blend in with IFVs.
>>737760250You don't play Arma 3 huh?
>>737770385no
>>737760250the armored cars were amazing in ww2 online.
>>737770823The Ontos did a number on the Viet Cong
>>737770439Even if the map battlefield map is miles wide. The ranges fights take place at are usually massively reduced to not favour fire support. Something like Graviteam: Tactics your lighter assets can often happily harass the enemy from far outside the effective range of infantry. Or in some cases be the most heavily armed, armoured and mobile things on the battlefield.
>>737771596the only war game I've seen actually try and portray realistic combat engagement ranges is WW2 Online, an MMO from like 2001
>>737771240Being an engineer during the Cold War must have been incredibly because it seems like they let you do literally whatever you wanted.
The truth is that in real life tank combat is kind of boring. It's basically Arma if you were in a box.>staring down bushes a mile away>get sniped by a tank you never sawThe 'advantages' of a tank (heavy armor and a big gun) typically get cancelled out by the fact that you're fighting other tanks. It's basically 'TDM but everyone has an AWP'.
>>737771684Graviteam: Tactics and their other game Tank Warfare: Tunisia are both good games in WW2. As is the Steel Panthers, more specifically the ones published on Shrapnel Games as WinSPMBT & WW2.Those are focused on ground combat. On the other side you have whichever games are descendent from Harpoon for air and naval combat. Pic related Command: Modern Operations for example. There are definitely more games out there.
>>737770315Rolling up on a couple of goons staking out a barn and lighting them up with 20mm
>>737772325I meant actual FPS/TPS-style gameplay, rather than a strategy game.
I've always thought you could make a cool armored car game where maybe you aren't fighting another force but where you're part of a task force meant to fight big monsters that attack a city.Make it a stubby thing with a big gun like an AML, make the mobility in an urban environment plus firepower the appeal. The armor doesn't have to be heavy since it's mostly defending against monster attacks like claws and bites and stuff.
>>737770889>>737770981Too big, fuck huge if you will.
>>737766893for me, it's the ordos trike
>>737773986You will not get much smaller than this.
>>737763038This, in war thunder there's fuckall you can do with your IFV if you run headfirst into a BVM or Leo2a7V because if the retarded tiny COD tier mapsHowever if we got actual large maps with good cover and sightlines, IFVs would shine in so many ways
>>737772576This thing and the AMX-10 are critically underrated
>>737774487I love the 10RC did you know it's the only wheeled military vehicle that can neutral steer?
>>737760250BEEP, BEEP, motherfuckers!
>>737760250>why do games hate armored cars?Once that Bolt Action game comes out that'll be their game. Bolt Action devs fuckin love armored cars. >222>Humber>Autoblinda>Greyhound Greyhounds usually get skipped for Stuarts but w/e. The point is they have a reactive move that makes them squirrely and hard to pin down, where most games treat them like bad tanks.
>>737760250I just want a combined armed sandbox filled with tons of shit in it. I saw a game called Easy Red 2 and it seems to be like that. Has anyone played it? Is it worth it?
>>737760250>why do games hate armored cars?No game ever needs them. Even the biggest maps are too small to need a specialized recon vehicle. You either slap them with a big enough gun to be worth it or just make turn them into actual tanks.
>>737770385>for urban environmentsNo, unless you want to instantly get smoked.
>>737760250In games where turret traverse speed difference isn't featured, tanks can easily track and kill the armored cars most of the time. In games where it is, often other minute features (such as armor penetration and part damage) also appear, and armored cars are simply weaker. Your only recourse either way is to hit-and-run with chip damage just to end the game upside-down on K/D. Playing Speedy Gonzalez with a mini tank in WoT is fun until you are reminded via killcam that armored warfare is more akin to sniper tactics with 100t of armor than it is drive-bys in a big field.
>>737765262>picsoul
>>737775465It's pretty decent. It's going for a much more "videogamey" approach rather than a more simulationist style a lot of games in the space go for I think that was a good call. It essentially plays identical to the Battlefield games of 20 years ago like 1942 or 2.It's distinctly more amatuer in presentation basically everywhere, but the trade off for that is all kinds of mechanics like pilotable vehicles, destructible terrain and AI controlled squads make it into the game and work at least passably well. Plus being able to portray a wide variety of theaters and armies. Worth a try I would say. On sale the base game will be less than 5 dollars.
>>737771976>Being an engineer during the Cold War must have been incredibly because it seems like they let you do literally whatever you wanted.>We need ground support but we only have cargo planes! What do we do?>Get me a welder, some cannons and hold my beer
>>737777367>It's going for a much more "videogamey" approach rather than a more simulationist styleHonestly, that's kinda what I was hoping for. I like games like Red Orchestra, Hell Let Loose, and Squad, but sometimes I just wanna power fantasy it up
>>737760250The armor was usually just a pointless burden on the engine and gas for their uses even irl

I fucking love armored cars because they are far more suitable for infantry-centric gameplay that most games involve. It'll annoy me for arma 3 there's a gajillion different tank mods and people have done all these tanks but if you want to find APCS or armored cars it's a lot slimmer. It'll just be the same god damn humvees, BTR60s, m113s.>>737770315Outside of big conventional warfare they're suitable as the armored vehicle where a tank is overkill or poor for terrain. South Africa whipped Angolan/Cuban T55s by using little Panhard AML armored cars that would multi-track drift to hit them in the rear.
