I like to compare to Tylor, a similar show that makes a satire out of its genre (nadesico mecha and tylor space opera). But while Nadesica trips as it goes on, Tylor gains momentum and ends in triumphant, cathartic and satisfactory way. I know it's strange to bring another semi unrelated show, but it's the best way i can explain why i didn't like nadesico as much.

After CCA you can pretty much watch the rest of the franchise in whatever order you wish without being too lost or confused.
