I had no idea you could patent game mechanics
What other cool mechanics are patented?

pretty sure Capcom has patented the Dragons Dogma pawn system so no other dev can even begin to try it. <pic unrelated>

Patent trolling in any case because it’s literally what redzone had been doing for ages in the NFL. The problem is America doesnt punish patent trolls. If you take them to court and beat them youre still down hundred thousands and they just laugh at you, so the only ones who can do it are other large companies who may not even care.
>>
>xitter indian thread
I'll bite.
There's no benefit for such a system and is fundamentally against good game design, in a well-designed multiplayer game, a good play is the result of multiple people executing different moves and abilities with good coordination, each being enabled by the previous one and enabling the next one. Who should get "credit" for it?

Here's an example of every single player perfectly executing a different move with intent, if one move was botched then the entire thing doesn't work. Who gets credit?

What was the mechanic? I haven't played OW in 8 years. Satanvision have also patented the way matchmaking makes you play against players with microtransactions to make you buy some yourself. People argue that Activision do not rig their matchmaking in any other way.

>What was the mechanic?
It's specifically a patent of the way they determine what the "play" is and how it gets displayed to the players. So you could tinker with this diagram a little, and it would probably give you some wiggle room to have a "play of the game" feature without getting dinged for infringing the patent. Pic related is taken from the link below.

Surely, it wouldn't take a huge AI model to parse each image on the catalog and determine

then automatically filter those threads, right?
Fuck it, I'll actually vibeslop an extension like that right now.

Aren't video game patents absurdly narrow? Like you couldn't make a 'play of the game' but you could play a 'highlights reel' after the match, because actiblizz can't patent the concept of a highlights reel

>>
>>737768369
Some are, but the play of the game one is what I would actually describe as pretty broad for a software patent.

>couldn't make a 'play of the game' but you could play a 'highlights reel' after the match
I don't think that would work, but not because it's 'highlights reel' vs 'play of the game'. Rather, you'd have to concoct a different way of organizing the way the server determines what the "highlights" are and sending instructions to players so they can see the "highlights". And I can't immediately think of a viable alternative. The 'highlights reel' that most people would implement would likely follow the same event flow as the patent, but just presenting the players with multiple smaller windows instead of one big one.

Mario Kart 8 has a highlight reel for races and cups.

Is this just some bait thread to talk about Nintendo and Pokemon? If you want examples of how ridiculous patents can get, look at Nintendo and TPC (plus Sony.)
>>
>>737767229
>play of the game

how can you patent something you didn't invent
>>
>>737767462
I don't think any other devs would even try it.
>>
>>737769604
A different method for determining the windows sent to players would also be fine.
I think it’s more likely that other devs just don’t care to make one.
>>
>>737768481
There's no other game with it. This is an industry of copycats. Only reason nobody is copying something that's half decent at worst are patents.
>>
>>737767229
Capcom used to have the patent for "minigame during a loading screen" IIRC from Okami, you could hit buttons in time to the paw prints to get items.
I heard they lost it or didn't renew it or something.

IIRC Metroid Prime 3 basically patented a system where you can power up using a hazard but if you use it too long you have to vent it out quickly by unloading your weapons or it'll kill you
it's not an especially bad example by Nintendo standards but I always thought it was too cool of a concept to be trapped in Prime 3 of all games
