What’s stopping me from looking for a drm free or cracked version, or using private servers for the game I buy? These days, any PC game, including those with Denuvo, can be played that way
Plus, I can install it on any HDD or SSD I want, even on a usb flash drive or microsd, and keep it there, no company can take that option away from me
You, on the other hand, are tied to the console and have fewer options. Or are you going to tell me it’s easy for you to play all your PS3 and PS4 games on your PS5? Because I can still play games from before 2000 on my PC, backward compatibility is far better on PC than on consoles

You can turn your Wii on right now if you still have it from the time and redownload any games you bought. The store is gone, but your redownloads are there and still up for redownoad to this day. Also the Wii is 20 years old and you can either emulate (homebrewing right on the console for the Wii is optimal if you go that route).

As for the "future" of the PlayStation with that, the PS5 store being shutdown anytime soon isn't happening. It'll probably be considered when the PS8 or PS9 is out and by that time if you're still yelling about PS5 games that's your own problem. Also you'll be, at least, in your late 50s or probably mid 60s dealing, so you really shouldn't be that concerned about it at that age.

It's a little late to complain about this. They've been axing backwards compatibility since the Ps3. Remember when they removed Ps2 compat because it was too expensive? Remember your PSN purchases no transferring to future consoles? Even if they were games that were trivial to emulate?

here's a sick joke:I had to jailbreak both my PSP and Vita because every game downloaded from the store kept having license issues. And even then I spend most of the time just emulating SNES roms.

But what happens when they lower that 30 to 15? 5? 1? If you let corporations take an inch they will plan to take an arm and reward bonuses to employees that take the leg too
Also what happens when PS6 or PS7 comes out and suddenly Sony won't authenticate your PS4 and PS5 purchases anymore? Tough luck, you gotta buy the latest overpriced hardware and MAYBE your purchases will transfer over (for a small upgrade fee teehee)
You will own NOTHING

They're thinking of stopping you from downloading games you've already purchased in the future, because it's an unnecessary expense for their servers, for games they no longer sell or support

What sony just did is a million times worse because when their servers go down, all your games are unplayable.

Look, you're getting the wrong information. If you bought the game on Steam, you'll need your Steam account. If you have the files, you just have to go through a file verification process, so you don't have to download them.
DRM-free games are a different story, like the ones sold by GOG or some of the free games on the Epic Games Store, or pirated games, those don’t have DRM, and there’s no license tied to them, so you can install them anywhere.
I can give my friend a copy of Resident Evil Village cracked by voices38, and the game will work. A friend can give me a copy of Stardew Valley that they bought on GOG, and that game will work for me. To play a game I bought on Steam, as long as I have my Steam account, I can play it, but if I want to play it outside of Steam, I have to crack it, and I can do that using the Steam files I have, which are called Steam Clean Files

Annoying but not like it's going to make any practical difference to 99.99% of people. When would this be an issue? When you take the console with you on a six-month stint to an isolated underwater drilling facility or remote Antarctic research base? Hopefully by the time they end support for the PS4/5 or PSN dies, it'll be as easy to jailbreak the consoles and load up them up with PKGs as the PS3.

In between whatever mobile game they're playing, kids are emulating on their phones now and don't seem to mind on way or the other about the "proper controller" part. I don't see why that wouldn't continue on in the future.
>I also don't know if they're okay with downloading the ISO or ROM of a game
Again, they seem to have no problem with this on their phone now. Where are you getting that they don't know how to do this or that it basically isn't just down for them at this point? We aren't in the early 2000s anymore.

Backing up pre-authed games and hoping the hard drive doesn't die, and there are no issues with the transfer process, and no issues with future hardware, and that the authorization never accidentally resets due to unknown reasons (for example a mismatch in system/hardware to when it was authorized), will never be a valid means of preservation. You've got nothing. The only thing that can be relied upon is fully DRM-free and piracy. I have a 1080p monitor, and this GPU is designed to run games at native 1080p–1440p resolutions
You can still run games at 4K if you want using FSR 4, but at that point, you’re better off buying an RX 9070 XT, which is much more expensive, this one cost me $380
It’s funny that the PS5 only runs it at 1080p, and you need a PS5 Pro if you want to run it at 1440p, neither console can run it at 4K. It also uses FSR 1, so the visuals look worse and the performance is worse too

Why are you bringing up PS2 games, a console that didn't sell its games online, just to try to prove your point about emulation? That's not the point, and you're not getting what I'm saying. The point is that it would be easier if Sony or Nintendo let you play the games you already bought in the past on your current consoles, instead of having to rely on third parties for that
You don’t need that on a PC; I don’t see why they couldn’t do something similar on consoles
They’re selling you PS1, PS2, and Virtual Console games through subscriptions, instead of giving you options to play the games you’ve already bought on previous consoles, like with Xbox
It’s clear what their priorities are, and it’s clear that people just accept it without question, like you defending them just because emulation exists

You WILL rebuy $70 games for having your console in storage for 31 days.

Yes, as long as the games can be cracked that is. That argument is also completely irrelevant since consoles for now have always been cracked sooner or later, so a console user could claim that it doesn't matter because in the future they could jailbreak their console. It's not an argument.
>>737786737
The big reason you moved to steam is because it was pretty much the only store with a wide variety of games. Easy to access and also it's convenient to not use disks nor buy disk readers.
>>737786747
Not true for the majority of the games and again it's completely irrelevant, you retards really don't get it.
As long as you have a disk you can do whatever you want with your game, buy it offline, play it offline, sell it, lend it to a friend, a family member, your kid in the future even, you can do whatever you want with it. With a digital "license" you can't do shit, you own nothing. I don't care if the version in the disk is the 1.0, that's not the main discussion here, even if by some unfortunate reason in the future, the patches were not available, that would still be better than not being able to play it at all.
>>737787018
GOG has no games, I have serious doubts about it continuing far into the future with the problems it's having, and piracy is not an argument since it applies to everything. >You don’t need that on a PC; I don’t see why they couldn’t do something similar on consoles
Because consoles and PC are distinct with different philosophies behind them to begin with. As much as people want to say consoles are just gimped PCs, that's only true from a strict, technical perspective. You are not allowed (or literally cannot) run emulators on a console. You cannot do work on a console. You cannot do anything on console except play the approved current generation video games that the company who made said console allows you to play (each game is a license, including the physical copies you have) and you abide by the rules they set. Consoles are just a way for you to funnel more money directly to the company who made it. Whether that be Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft it doesn't matter. So to answer your question for "if the PC can do it, why can't consoles" it's because these companies don't own the PC, but they do own the consoles. Nintendo owns the Nintendo consoles, Sony own the PlayStation, and Microsoft owns the Xbox. So they are well within their parameters to do what they do in order to create a walled garden ecosystem which guarantees they wring the most money out of you. They made the garden, they direct, lead and set the rules and guidelines for that garden. So if they decide to shut down any of their online stores, there was liking a clause in the TOS that you didn't read which said they have full rights and authority to do so.

Video game machines are locked down digital toy boxes where the toy maker has complete legal authority over you and you agree to it. PCs are just a platform by which toy makers can distribute their games, but they, as distributers do not have control over the platform by why the games are distributed themselves. That's why consoles can't do what PCs or even phones can.

Of course, but my point was that unlike physical on console, where you could actually own a game on disc and have it play on any console without connecting to anything, as far into the future as the hardware and disc survived, the same was not true with PC. Late-stage physical on PC meant you got inconvenienced AND you still had no ownership due to all the license and activation crap. So there was literally no point in staying with physical media unless you wanted a useless little plastic box on your shelf.
>>
>>737788014

>>737787087
ok let's set aside the fact that the PS3 is two (2) generations old. it took YEARS for reliable soft modding to become a thing, and sony STILL tries to break it even in 2026.
console piracy is only a good option for playing older games on outmoded machines with no internet connection, PC gaymen does not have this limitation.
oh, and remember the Other OS feature that let you do cool shit with your PS3 before sony just abruptly revoked it from everyone because there was a small chance it would make piracy slightly easier? yeah, real compelling example of a reason to spend money on a console.

let's also set aside the fact that unlike the PS3, the PS4/5 barely even have enough games to warrant buying a console, even if you can play the games for free.
this is a naive assumption, because the ENTIRE POINT of a console is to be as locked down as possible. they are physical DRM enforcement devices, and all three console manufacturers spend huge amounts of money every year researching and developing new ways to make them as difficult to mod and pirate on as possible. the PS3 was child's play compared to the 4/5 and it still was not easy to do.

basically the only real argument that puts consoles ahead of PCs is that the AI slop bubble hasn't popped yet so commodity PC hardware is still ludicrously expensive

pic rel are my gog games, most of them are from when I had prime video for $3 a month
>and piracy is not an argument since it applies to everything
The thing is, with a PC you can use piracy to your advantage, but it also has the benefit of preserving games. On consoles, if a game isn’t resold, it’s effectively dead; on a PC, however, it’s preserved for the future

This is a thread about digital ownership, not a general PC vs console owner's debate. All digital ownership except GOG sucks for preservation, that's just a fact. And if we accept that piracy in some form or another will be the only real solution in the far future, then whether you buy the games on Steam or PSN today has no relevance at all. The reality is that the more attack vectors available, the better for everyone. Ponder for example that both Steam and PSN went kaput in the future and hypervisor was never a thing. Then we could potentially have been in a situation where trying to jailbreak a PS5 to the same levels as PS3 is now would be the more worthwhile option, rather than individually trying to crack all the Denuvo-infested PC games that were left hanging.
>>
I really hope the internet goes down for a couple of weeks for everyone at some point. We will see who survives and who had all their entertainment online.

>Because consoles and PC are distinct
Not for console video game companies, there’s a reason why, when they release exclusives, they often exclude the PC as well or are selective about it
>You are not allowed (or literally cannot) run emulators on a console
>iterally cannot
The games included in the PlayStation Plus Premium subscription give you access to a classic catalog of PS1 and PS2 games; all of these games are emulated
Nintendo Classics, part of the Nintendo Switch Online subscription, lets you play a classic catalog of games ranging from the NES to the GameCube, and all of those games are emulated.
Why do you say it’s not allowed, if the games themselves are emulated? They aren’t running natively; they’re games emulated directly on the console
Did you ignore what I said about Xbox? Did you ignore what I said about Xbox? Original Xbox and Xbox 360 games also run via emulation, aside from the fact that some are offered through Game Pass, but if you have the original game on disc, you can play them
https://support.xbox.com/en-US/help/games-apps/backward-compatibility/play-xbox-360-games-on-xbox-one
So with emulated games, you can still access them without having to subscribe or buy them again.
Why do you think I brought this up? Because if PCs can do it, and Xbox can do it, Nintendo and Sony can too
Stop defending those damn companies, man. They don’t put food on your table. You have to be on the consumer’s side, not the company’s. Regardless of whether consoles are closed hardware, I just showed you that they can do it, but it depends on them, and on people not being so permissive so they don’t get screwed over. If people don’t complain and just let it slide with excuses like you do, they’ll keep doing the same thing, and they’ll keep selling you the same game from three generations ago over and over again

at least my experience with steam is that it's not based on consecutive days, they run the loicense check every 30 so if that happens to align with any kind of service disruption you're fucked. we had 2 back to back power outages last summer and the only game on my sneed deck that would work was lumines

nitendo makes you pay a subscription to play gamecube games, xbox doesn't require the same for og or 360 xbox games

shitendo sues emulator devs, xbox allows you to install them to your console

shitendo has a useless button on their controll that doesn't work unless you pay a sub, xbox doesn't

80% of shitch poo physical third party games are on goycuck cards, less than 20% of retail xbox disc don't contain the entire game

nitendo makes you pay a subscription to back your save files up, xbox doesn't

your pathetic attemps at trying to shoehorn your dogshit in with valve is funny though. xbox is more pro-consumer in every way

Microsoft wants you to pay for a Game Pass tier on their $1200+ console just to use online. You can stop shilling Microsoft, they're worse in every way. As bad as Sony.

Primarily because you aren't allowed as per the manufacturer of the company. THEY can, but you can't and they are legally within their right to do it. Just like they can shut down whatever they want, too. Not saying I endorse it, but they can and will. Nintendo has been using ROMs and emulators since at least the Wii, but if you want to put ZSNES on the Wii that's against the rules they set. I think you understood that, but I think you enjoy the back and forth, which I can respect. Basically everyone here is just bots and people paid to shit it up anymore, so I understand.

This attitude is why I always say gamers have no self respect. These companies know it too. That's why they will turn the heat up with more restrictive terms and higher prices because they know you people will shrug and say "whatever". I've seen people say they're gonna buy the next gen Xbox day 1 even if it's $1200. Ultimately people choose their Hell.

I was almost tempted to get a PS5, just for Ace Combat 8. There were only a handful of other games I was interested in, and I couldn't really justify the purchase in my mind for games like Death Stranding 2 and Dynasty Warriors Origins, but Ace 8 almost pushed me over the edge.
Glad I decided against getting one. Dodged a bullet.
>>
The Barrier is now affecting the few games you've already bought.
>>
>>737790442
How is it delusion, you monkey? If it's an Xbox PC, you're getting online DRM. They want to subsize it, when they merge the Xbox console/PC Store (really just using the Xbox PC Store), they're going to raise the tax to 30%. Because the Helix is locked-down, they'll add paid online since it's a "console".

Steam is releasing the controller now because it's the least effected by the RAM-rodding the consumer market is getting right now. Even then they are blaming the tariffs for the $99 price, you think they will not pass the upcharges to the consumer when they have stated it will be priced for the PC market? They prob are still going to wait for more stable prices before doing any batch orders for the limited amount.

I mean, I get that you can't just load ROMs directly, I was actually referring to using the kind of emulation they already have, with their own ROMs, but being able to verify purchases you made in the past, so you don't have to buy that game again or be forced to subscribe to play it. Given the backward compatibility of the original Xbox and 360, which is also emulation, it’s hard for me not to think of something similar that Nintendo or Sony might do. It would have to be digital for Nintendo, since doing it physically is pretty much impossible with Switch
>Basically everyone here is just bots and people paid to shit it up anymore
That’s true
>What anime are you watching AnimeImageAnon?
To be honest, I haven't watched anything lately. The last thing I watched was the second season of Panty & Stocking. Lately, I've been reading VNs and playing Pragmata, it's actually a really good game
>>
>>737790137
In the old days it would take less than an hour, Xbox tranny. Your FUD isn't working.
>>
>>737791591
If you didn't buy them on GOG, you don't own them. And Steam has in fact the exact same 'this' that the topic refers to, with authorized games suddenly becoming unauthorized in offline mode due to something happening under the hood that you had no knowledge of or control over. Plus this has no bearing on basically anything or anyone in the now, and will only become potentially relevant decades off, and no one know what the landscape will look like then.

tl;dr if this factors into your decision at all into which anti-consumer digital platform to lock yourself into (except GOG), you are delusional or a shill.
