What the fuck was their problem ?
>>737779153They’re our nemesis.
damn 10 more years of pretending that an enemy getting + 5% damage when low HP and next to a dog during the daylight in the rare event you die to the braindead enemies in the game is some kind of mindblowing shit
>>737779153will warner bros even last till 2036? kek
if this shit was so cool then why did the games flop and kill the studio along with it? the whole narrative behind how this was some sort of earth shattering mechanic seems like a desperate attempt to get people to care about it so WB can license it out. but no one gives 2 shits about it
stop kiking games
I never played these games, but that system really was THAT good?
the problem is the dimwits at the patent office allowing companies to patent game mechanics despite game mechanics not actually being patentable under law.the way it's supposed to work is you can patent the specific code implementation, but not the broader idea. you ought to be able to make your own nemesis system so long as you don't use any of WB's code to do so.but as it's actually implemented, well, you get Nintendo slapping lawsuits against everyone with monster taming gameplay despite not even being to first to market with the idea.>>737779475
>>737779287also getting inmunities reaching demigod levels like achilles so you have to fart him in a corner to damage and kill it
>>737779528not really when you play shadow of war and get shit uruks tanking fire or your attacks except some stupid sneak environmental kill
>>737779287>>737779569Yea I put like 80-100 hours in the game and the system wasn't that special.. it was just like any other difficulty scaling system.
Nemesis system is not even that great, it's just 'ok' but it's more about the principle than the design itself. It just doesn't warrant a lockdown. Fucking nothing does, really. That faggot Kojima also attempted to lock down various mechanics from Death Stranding, but all of them were already non-unique and done in earlier games. I hate everyone to death who patents mechanics.
>>737779475>>737779287Retard alert
>>737779153they trademarked it?
I love Shadow of War.I want to mod it.
>>737779557bald
I'm indie and I want to use the nemesis system. How do I reverse engineer it?
>>737779153
>>737781926All in all it's a concept as old as roguelikes that you have minibosses that spawn with random affixes and tags. the only thing Shadows of Mordor did is have them occasionally hunt you down after you killed them with more affixes and tags.
>>737779475Its not about money its just about owning the patent so nobody else can outdo you and make more money off the concept. Corporations are like this with damn near everything. I'm sure someone wishes they could patent the wheel or dinosaurs or some other concepts and ideas throughout human history. Amazon probably wishes they can patent oxygen and force you to pay 1 dollar a day for breathing it. They are all the enemies of humanity along with their fans and adjacents.
>>737782409If I came out with a novel idea it's within my rights to PATENT it and prevent dubious actors to make money out of my hard work. Anyone who thinks otherwise has never created anything worthwhile in their life.
The funny thing is when this mechanic isn't owned anymore, no one will make it because it requites a lot of work
>>737779153>Release new game with nemesis system in mind.>Make nemesis system as detachable mod> Do marketing purely with shit like YouTubers like sethtzeentach or whatever.>Make them play it with mod and link mod>Post mod everywhere >Default game doesn't have mod, can't be suedWhy has nobody done this????
>>737782293>random affixes and tags. You can't patent something like this so is certainly not it lol.
>>737782778They don't know how it really works.

>>737782981Nigger
>>737782565The problem is the idea is not novel. The idea of enemies that pursue players and become stronger or adapt is as old as Dungeons and Dragons, and recurring villains.

>>737779475>if this shit was so cool then why did the games flop and kill the studio along with it?because they put something cool in a wanabe Assassins creed game
>>737779287Yup, its praise for basically just having an enemy spit out some lines of dialog like its the exact same enemy. If the system worked like how people thought it does, the enemies would be persistent on the map instead of just spawning in randomly. Essentially when you died or transitioned areas, shit would randomly happen to a list of NPCs instead of say be like Kenshi and be incredibly sandbox-designed
>>737782872Copyright is theft from the public domain and the free expression of humanity
>>737784349Exactly, its not the "Nemesis system" that holds back the Shadows game its the dogshit tier combat system that should have died with Arkham Asylum and the boring tower climbing. But nah people here would blame a fire extinguisher for not saving a house that is covered in gasoline.
>>737779153I would think as long as you don’t specifically advertise that your game features a “nemesis system” by name you would be fine.>Enemies can escape and then return later to get revenge on youIs such a vague concept that I wonder how it could even be defined let alone legally enforced.
>>737785532God knows Warner would try.
Copyright can be so fucking gay sometimes. Imagine if someone went and copyrighted the idea of a character jumping, or using food for health. That’s not even going into copyrighting genetically modified organisms
>>737783687people would just copy it if it was that good
>>737785828Yeah, it's not like we have patented corn DNA, that's just fucking dystopian, right?
So many fags here haven't played the game and it shows.
retard here, explain what's even the point of copyright in theory
>>737785903I remember having to write a letter to a corporation as a project in high school because a farmer who bought the rights to GMO seeds pushed their fields against the borders of other farmers who didn't and effectively let their seeds grow in their lands. It ended up a burden for the people who didn't buy the GMO seeds to prove that they didn't get any windswept seeds to grow on their farm lands, and this was over 10 years ago.
>>737785828>Imagine if someone went and copyrighted the idea of a character jumping, or using food for healthI wouldn’t put it past Nintendo to try and legally argue Mario invented jumping
>>737779153Cool it with the antisemitic rhetoric
>>737785532the legal enforcement begins and ends with the assembly and implementationdont have the ranking system and dont have the same procedure and youre free of the patent
>>737785828>copyright niggery only helps out those at the top anyway because P2W is the name of the game>patents are regularly thrown out when they threaten industries of actual worth like weapons, propulsion, pharmaceutical and energyLoleLmoa
>>737785996Its a "if you copy this I will sue you into the ground" threat. It works at keeping both big companies and small companies in line due that threat alone. At the point we are at now companies like WB don't even need to actually do anything and people will just not copy their stuff because of fear. You could copy the nemesis system and not call it that but anyone with a fully functioning brain wont because of the "what if" scenario of WB getting pissy and suing them, not worth the hassle.Only retards online will argue otherwise.
>>737779153patents cost money to maintain.this means that WB would prefer to pay money every year to maintain the patent and deny the industry this mechanic even with their studios closed.
>>737779153A patent just means that you can't do this shit by using the exact same methods, not that you cannot do a similar idea. This always felt to me as some artificially inflated drama to pretend the Nemesis System was way better than it actually was.
>>737786310It actually means>we have a reason to sue you if we don't like what you make
>>737787439Basically, yeah.
>>737786271Kinda based doe, no?
It's not even that interesting a system. Ok, it was neat the first time seeing the guy come back, but then... it was no game changer.

>>737779153The nemesis system would be perfect for a predator game. Just imagine your human prey taking on cyborg enhancements after you beat them.
Remember, if they don't use it, they lose it. They will actually have to put out games using the Nemesis system if they wish to keep it.

>>737784435I think they were persistent to an extent, like each time you'd progress the time by either moving to a new area or dying they'd be spawned somewhere on the map and would remain there or wander around the region until it happened again. It wasn't some "every character has their own daily routines holy shit!" thing.
>>737781926You’re Indian? Kys pajeet
>>737789068They haven't put one out in nearly a decade, I don't think they plan to.
>>737788908The Mad Max game would have been great for it as well, and that was even published by WB. They just don't give a shit.
>>737779153How long did Koei Tecmo have an exclusive patent on loading screen minigames? It did lapse eventually but that didn't suddenly lead to a bunch of games having them. Just because it's not being sat on doesn't mean people will ever actually use the mechanic now that it's freed. I agree it's disgusting they can just sit on something like this though.
>>737789731The canned Mad Max sequel was apparently meant to have had this system.
They shouldnt be able to copywrite something that just exists. Its just a basic hierarchy.
>>737789068TOP KEK!!!!! SAYS WHO???
>>737788908>we'll never get a Predator game like that or a good one period since Disney owns the IP
>>737779723Cry some more, bitch nigger.
>>737779287The only part of this shitpost that is true is that towards the later part of the game I was so easily able to annihilate everything that I had to let myself be killed in order to try and boost any of the elites high enough to guard one of my forts. But then they'd usually instantly boost a few levels higher than me so I'd have to shame them to delevel them which might brainfuck and make them useless. It was tedious.
>>737779153I finished Shadow of Mordor and while the system is good, it doesn't feel like it makes the game that much more fun. The story doesn't force you to engage with it on a very deep level. By the time you're done with it what are you even supposed to do? The moment to moment gameplay is serviceable but gets old and is easily broken with the stuff the game gives you as part of the GOTY edition. I think they wanted you to set up orcs to rise to the top and then kill them for more exp/loot but there's not any point to it. Never played the sequel so I don't know if they addressed these issues
>>737779153Abolish the patent system, it serves only kikes and trolls.

>>737779287I would rather say that the illusion of exclusivity is the reason for people pretending that procedurally generated characters are good. Imagine if someone made procedurally generated Animal Crossing villagers by combining their dialogue
>>737785828Patents and copyrights are different things.
>>737781926>>737782785Just remove the hierarchy, that's the part that is actually patented
>>737781926You can read their patent online.
>>737779153I don't even really understand why anyone praised it. It wasn't anything amazing. Now patentraping it so nobody can improve on it is shit.
>>737782872Unenforceable especially after what happened with the palworld vs Nintendo law suit. Nintendont lost
>>737779153Patents should have a thing where if a company doesn't properly utilize them on a proprietary basis they can either be challenged to remove the patent or forcibly grant a license to use it at a diminishing charge relative to when it was last used.
if someone challenged it would more than likely be struck down. the system is designed by necessity for granting a patent to be less rigorous than review of a patent by a judge during a challenge.
>>737791229Is this supposed to be a gotcha?
>>737792434Patents safeguard inventions fucking idiot. You want us to be China?
>>737779287Diablo 2 had randomly generated mini-boss monsters with randomly generated names and abilities back in 1999. I still don't understand what's so special about the "Nemesis" system besides them getting a couple of voice lines vaguely related to their abilities.
>>737791229>>737792458>IS THAT A PALWORLD PLAYER WITH A BOOTLEG T-SHIRT? NIGGERMAN HELP ME I'M GOING INSANE
>>737779153Unironically, what game could even do it justice? It worked for LoTR because orcs can survive an amusing amount of injury, but what else could you do with it? A Star Wars game with Sith dudes who keep coming back after you kill them? Robots that keep upgrading? Undead? Orks? It only really works if you have enemies that can come back no matter what fuckery the player can pull, so it really does narrow the field on the style of game.
>>737792962>Unironically, what game could even do it justice?Pokemon
okay, but games already use similar systems without breaking the copyright, or just haven't been found yet. forgot the name of the one where enemies are clones of you and every time to fuck them up with stealth or environmental tricks they start to deviate from being taken advantage of, and sometimes even sneak up on you to snap your neck like you'd usually do when you go to investigate something.
>>737793253Didn't Pokémon had the battle repeater and phone were rivals could call you back if they were ready to fight you once more ?
>>737792621It's more than just randomly generated enemies. The player's actions essentially dictate what they'll become. Kill an orc using poison? He comes back to life now a sickly green color and poison as his ability. Decapitate an orc from the machine tribe? He comes back reassembled as a cyborg. Get killed by some random enslaved non-captain orc? He gets promoted into a captain with a slave knight title. Orcs will gloat if they killed you before, express vengeance. They can help you, betray you and so on, and will acknowledge that. The fact that enemies can evolve depending entirely on the player's actions is why it's so praised. It's highly dynamic and more than just procedurally generated monsters with random names due to how many conditions can modify them. Orc captains are randomly generated at first and then given more strengths and weaknesses depending on what history they build with the player, like a nemesis.
>>737779153Allowing mechanics to be copyrighted is really retarded
