I miss vehicular combat games. Why did they die, and how would you make them not dead? Which one was your favorite?

People hated TM3 and for the life of me I could never understand why. I personally thought it was the best feeling of the original 4 games.

Was it 3 or 4 that had the screwy physics where your shit just flipped over onto its back at every impact and then you got dogpiled by the AI? Also not really related but I always found it kinda interesting how 3 and especially 4 really laid out the interface/HUD style for Black despite it being a sort-of-TM1 reboot by the original devs. Especially the crosshair minimap and the weapon selection being those sleek spinning 3D icons/color models.

Y'know what, I do remember that. It was Twisted Metal 3. Despite that, for some reason I always thought it was the best one. If I tried playing them today, I imagine I'd probably think TM2 is the best one.

We live in an era where battle royale is the most forever money making genre in the history of video games.
We live in an era where Sony has THE battle royal IP in their hands and does literally nothing but sit on it.
We live in an era where both of the above are true at the same time somehow.

For me, it's Vigilante 8. Fun 70's theme and music, and even has deformable terrain which was crazy for its gen. I really like how the weapon combo attacks worked, too. Though since they were so crucial to learn if you wanted any hope of winning, they should probably have just made them less esoteric.

I'm currently making a vehicle combat game. It has story missions that will be some combination of combat, racing, survival, exploration/location, etc - multi-obkective. Also all story missions are co-op compatible, 1-4 people online. Also also, there will be dynamically appearing PvP missions as well on the mission map that you can select and go up against 2 or more other car crews.

stop trying to cover all the bases. make combat or make racing. racing with combat has two routes:
>mario kart
in which you're trying to compete with mario kart, which is a retard's errand, and
>TM PS3 race missions
which were garbage and no one liked them or wanted them other than one asshole on the dev team who insisted on it
the third option is like. Jak X Nicktoons Wombat Combat Racing™ type mascot shovelware

why does everyone copy TM/V8 and no one copies Interstate 76? is the first person view/'regular driving' style too weird?

MAG would work really well in the modern day live service games
Then there's series like Twisted Metal and even Ratchet and Clank that would adapt to battle royals really well

Please make the cars actually maneuverable and not have real car handling/turning arcs. Part of what makes TM and V8 so good is that even the most sluggish semi trucks can still 180 while keeping their momentum going so you can properly fight off opponents tailing you then whip the car back around and keep driving the way you were going.

>w-well the consoles had more-
yeah they had twisted metal and a whole bunch of craptastic "WWE wrestlers in construction karts" shitheaps, car combat has always been a tiny genre regardless of platform

>>737792357
I always felt like in some of these games they lean a little too hard into that and the 'car' part is completely gone and it's just Quake with funny looking characters. Which is fine I guess, but also leads to the TM meta of "hit them with a freeze missile and then unload everything else because you won't hit anything otherwise." I76 is way less silly with its handling and is plenty fun.
>>
>>737791975
My approach is more like environments that actually have systems in it - pedestrians, cops, etc. But then you need to carry out a mission within a certain time frame - aka - battling in one area and then you need to race to the next objective all while these bigger systems such as cops are adding an extra challenge. Like if you plunked down a twisted metal battle inside gta and then the battle was just the first of 3 objectives in the map / mission.
I don't think a pure battle or racing car game is going to be very compelling to players.

and also a game thats arcade like you describe
this game looks pretty real but also arcadey and something inbetween both those extremes would fit the style best. just a middle ground. maybe feels just a little more heavy and realistic than need for speed underground 2. just slightly
>>
I do not accept that TM3 and TM4 exist - those are just the unofficial names for black and head-on respectively and nobody will convince me otherwise.
>>
It's a niche genre.
In terms of recent releases that I like:
> Grip (spiritual successor to Rollcage/Rollcage 2). Focuses heavily on the racing.
>and a tiny little (sub-1gb) PSX-evocative game called Fumes. Focuses heavily on combat and mix/matching chassis, suspension, and weapons to your playstyle or to counter the boss you're trying to kill.

Remember that years ago New Blood had a car combat game in the works that seemingly fell off the face of the earth.

>I miss vehicular combat games.
I mostly only really care for Twisted Metal. The only other one on its level was Vigilante 8.
>Why did they die
Because the genre was a fad basically. It probably only went as long as it did because Twisted Metal was pretty good and a Sony first party exclusive series.
>and how would you make them not dead?
Well these battle royal massive multiplayer games are a thing now. I'd probably make it so the new one plays into this. As for the single player I would bring back all the cars from the previous games and their characters. I probably would also have a build your own car creator. But the thing is would all of this be worth it because would people want to buy a new Twisted Metal that actually did attempt to be the best possible game it could be? I don't think this genre will ever come back.
>Which one was your favorite?
Twisted Metal 2 was definitely the best one. I should play Twisted Metal Black again. I remember it had the darkest tone of all the games and probably also least amount of humor but it was basically the last great game the series had.
>>
I thought Rogue trip was pretty neat.
>>
>>737791975
pure battling is fun, but its a hard sell.
im approaching the game from a systems perspective - think GTA style city (but simpler) with pedestrian + cops etc and a helldivers 2 type mission that you can play with friends (coop) that contains objectives, battle and racing elements.
>>737792357
>>737792487
the car handling is super important. my cars are physics based but give a ton of control + boost, drip, dash and jump abilities.
also physical damage is massive - you can KO a target with one perfect dash attack

Im just gonna dump my ideas here for the TW game that will never be
>Online battle royale
>Offline stages where you fights bosses to progress a character's story
>Base machinegun does significantly more damage so keeping enemies off your tail actually matters
>Vehicles get big medium small classification
>Bigger vehicles are slower but immune to ram damage of smaller vehicles
>Bigger vehicles has more weapon slots than smaller vehicles( you cannot just hoard 500 homing missiles)
>Significantly more weapon options and tiers
>Options to upgrade your car during a match
>Huge fucking ramps and environtment that can damage you if youre not careful
>NO off vehicle combat (can you believe they thought its a good idea?)
>>
Fumes is cool

>Vehicles get big medium small classification
>Bigger vehicles are slower but immune to ram damage of smaller vehicles
TMB already does this sort of (other entries might as well) iirc manslaughter is the largest player vehicle (since Minion is shrunk when playing as him) and does considerable ram damage even without turbo, but his machine guns are mounted so wide you can shoot right over mr grimm and the sports cars
look at the size of that fucking truck, jesus christ. also bigger vehicles still do fat ram damage to other big 'uns too
>>
Lets be honest anons

>>

>>
how many layers of render to texture can the PS2 handle, boss?
>idk bro just let it go on forever
>>
>>737790619
Because it's pretty hard to do anything with it. At its core, they're just more AFPS deathmatch, which usually doesn't lend well to single player content, at least in a direct manner, and then you also have the difficulty of making the levels feel satisfying to navigate and shoot other players with car movement.
>>
>>737800362
>At its core, they're just more AFPS deathmatch,
Everyone is too afraid to lean into letting cars drive like cars instead of Doomguy. It's worse than AFPS because people have long since figured out 'moving' and 'aiming' at the same time, but in these games you're still stuck with 'stand in one spot and rotate around' half the time because you can't aim shit other than right in front of you.
