I miss vehicular combat games. Why did they die, and how would you make them not dead? Which one was your favorite?
People hated TM3 and for the life of me I could never understand why. I personally thought it was the best feeling of the original 4 games.

>>737790784Was it 3 or 4 that had the screwy physics where your shit just flipped over onto its back at every impact and then you got dogpiled by the AI? Also not really related but I always found it kinda interesting how 3 and especially 4 really laid out the interface/HUD style for Black despite it being a sort-of-TM1 reboot by the original devs. Especially the crosshair minimap and the weapon selection being those sleek spinning 3D icons/color models.
>>737790974>Was it 3 or 4 that had the screwy physics where your shit just flipped over onto its back at every impact and then you got dogpiled by the AI?Y'know what, I do remember that. It was Twisted Metal 3. Despite that, for some reason I always thought it was the best one. If I tried playing them today, I imagine I'd probably think TM2 is the best one.
>>737790784>best feelingnice b8 m8
>>737790930>someone's making a ps1 twisted metal successor>but it's all AI models and vibe-coding which, to his credit, is just as janky looking to actually play as the PS1 games, but probably not on purpose>someone else is making a TMB clonehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIAxIT428T4>but it's the Quake Live version to Black's Quake 3 Arena, the physics and controls look absolutely pristine but everything is stripped down to flat colors, names-filed-off vehicles, the balance is being done by the 12 people who are still playing black online (e.g. compfags) and my dude is really skirting the line directly cloning everything down to weapon names and colors>vigilante 8 is dead and forgotten
>>737790619They died because FPS came out and it's just better.
>>737791402i'm pretty sure FPSs came first

We live in an era where battle royale is the most forever money making genre in the history of video games. We live in an era where Sony has THE battle royal IP in their hands and does literally nothing but sit on it.We live in an era where both of the above are true at the same time somehow.
>>737790619For me, it's Vigilante 8. Fun 70's theme and music, and even has deformable terrain which was crazy for its gen. I really like how the weapon combo attacks worked, too. Though since they were so crucial to learn if you wanted any hope of winning, they should probably have just made them less esoteric.
>>737791636Embarrassing.
>>737790619I'm currently making a vehicle combat game. It has story missions that will be some combination of combat, racing, survival, exploration/location, etc - multi-obkective. Also all story missions are co-op compatible, 1-4 people online. Also also, there will be dynamically appearing PvP missions as well on the mission map that you can select and go up against 2 or more other car crews.>pic related is what the game visuals look like (ui is a mockup)If anyone has suggestions etc I'm all ears
>>737791794>and does literally nothing but sit on it.They funded a direct-to-streaming TV series.
Cel Damage was always my favorite.
>CHECKPOINT>CAR FIXED>WASTED
>>737791861nice pic anon looking forward to it>If anyone has suggestionsstop trying to cover all the bases. make combat or make racing. racing with combat has two routes:>mario kartin which you're trying to compete with mario kart, which is a retard's errand, and>TM PS3 race missionswhich were garbage and no one liked them or wanted them other than one asshole on the dev team who insisted on itthe third option is like. Fun fact: We are 9 more years away from Vigilante 8's release as Vigilante 8 was to the actual 70's.
why does everyone copy TM/V8 and no one copies Interstate 76? is the first person view/'regular driving' style too weird?
>>737792097I dunno, I think Interstate 76 was fucking great. Comparing it to Vigilante 8 is like comparing golf to minigolf. The latter just holds attentions better thanks to the big gimmicky bullshit like a windmill blocking your putt.
>>737791794Sony has countless IP's the under utilize. Home would have made a great VRchat for consolesMAG would work really well in the modern day live service gamesThen there's series like Twisted Metal and even Ratchet and Clank that would adapt to battle royals really well
>>737792175>Ratchet and Clank that would adapt to battle royals really wellget the fuck out of my thread you satanic motherfucker

>>737791636>>737791729>>737791770PC and Console games were completely different worlds at that time. Goldeneye was the first popular FPS on console, and it wasn't until Halo that FPS console games were anything but a niche.
>>737791971Holy fuck memory unlocked>Nooo BR bad!>>737792191Shut up loser.
>>737791729>>737791770FPSes came out on PC? You're telling me on PC, where car combat games were NEVER popular, that FPSes got there first? Interesting, thanks for proving me right.
>>737791861>>737792002Please make the cars actually maneuverable and not have real car handling/turning arcs. Part of what makes TM and V8 so good is that even the most sluggish semi trucks can still 180 while keeping their momentum going so you can properly fight off opponents tailing you then whip the car back around and keep driving the way you were going.
>>737790619The truth is that these games were never popular.t. someone who loves Vigilant 8
>>737791889I can't believe they made TWO FUCKING SEASONS and we still don't have a FUCKING GAME ANNOUNCEMENT.
>>737792293>You're telling me on PC, where car combat games were NEVER popular,Had it not been for the laws of this land I would have slaughtered you.>w-well the consoles had more-yeah they had twisted metal and a whole bunch of craptastic "WWE wrestlers in construction karts" shitheaps, car combat has always been a tiny genre regardless of platform>>737792357I always felt like in some of these games they lean a little too hard into that and the 'car' part is completely gone and it's just Quake with funny looking characters. Which is fine I guess, but also leads to the TM meta of "hit them with a freeze missile and then unload everything else because you won't hit anything otherwise." I76 is way less silly with its handling and is plenty fun.
>>737791975My approach is more like environments that actually have systems in it - pedestrians, cops, etc. But then you need to carry out a mission within a certain time frame - aka - battling in one area and then you need to race to the next objective all while these bigger systems such as cops are adding an extra challenge. Like if you plunked down a twisted metal battle inside gta and then the battle was just the first of 3 objectives in the map / mission.I don't think a pure battle or racing car game is going to be very compelling to players.>>737792002>Pic related btw
>>737790619
>>737792581the fact we live in a world where people can find both cars and guns boring disappoints me on what i can only describe as a sub-primal level
I've played a lot of TM 2012 and enjoy it greatly but I shall remain forever turbo salty they fucked up the rooftops level. Rooftops is usually the best level in any TM game and they fucked it up for the ps3 game.
>>737792002moshi moshi mystery niggas.png/10
>>7377918272nd offense was easy to complete with most characters without even knowing the combos existed (source: me who didn't even know the combos existed)
>>737791971I can still hear it to this day
freeze should have never been made an energy attack.
>>737790784The game looked and controlled like ass.Endings were total garbage. TM4 was fine.
>>737792002this looks amazing
>>737792357i want a game like this with full blown sim tier physics so we can play twisted metal with race wheels doing actual drifting with handbrakes and shitand also a game thats arcade like you describethis game looks pretty real but also arcadey and something inbetween both those extremes would fit the style best. just a middle ground. maybe feels just a little more heavy and realistic than need for speed underground 2. just slightly
I do not accept that TM3 and TM4 exist - those are just the unofficial names for black and head-on respectively and nobody will convince me otherwise.
It's a niche genre. In terms of recent releases that I like:> Grip (spiritual successor to Rollcage/Rollcage 2). Focuses heavily on the racing.>and a tiny little (sub-1gb) PSX-evocative game called Fumes. Focuses heavily on combat and mix/matching chassis, suspension, and weapons to your playstyle or to counter the boss you're trying to kill.
Remember that years ago New Blood had a car combat game in the works that seemingly fell off the face of the earth.
>>737793761>Fumesholy fuck this looks great>singleplayeroh...
>>737793741>race wheelsconsider: one hand on the steering wheel, another on the stick part of a HOTAS instead of a shifter>>737793761the demo for fumes was neat but i feel like the full game, if it's just more of the same, will unfortunately be the combo of 'roguelike' and 'part grinding/upgrading' that puts me to sleep
>>737793761Grip XR soon™ fellow flight sim enthusiast.
>>737790784Tm2 was total chaos. 3 was fine, but i really missed, and still miss, Single Trac's engine.
>>737790619>I miss vehicular combat games.I mostly only really care for Twisted Metal. The only other one on its level was Vigilante 8. >Why did they dieBecause the genre was a fad basically. It probably only went as long as it did because Twisted Metal was pretty good and a Sony first party exclusive series. >and how would you make them not dead?Well these battle royal massive multiplayer games are a thing now. I'd probably make it so the new one plays into this. As for the single player I would bring back all the cars from the previous games and their characters. I probably would also have a build your own car creator. But the thing is would all of this be worth it because would people want to buy a new Twisted Metal that actually did attempt to be the best possible game it could be? I don't think this genre will ever come back.>Which one was your favorite?Twisted Metal 2 was definitely the best one. I should play Twisted Metal Black again. I remember it had the darkest tone of all the games and probably also least amount of humor but it was basically the last great game the series had.
I thought Rogue trip was pretty neat.
>>737791975pure battling is fun, but its a hard sell.im approaching the game from a systems perspective - think GTA style city (but simpler) with pedestrian + cops etc and a helldivers 2 type mission that you can play with friends (coop) that contains objectives, battle and racing elements. >>737792357>>737792487the car handling is super important. my cars are physics based but give a ton of control + boost, drip, dash and jump abilities.also physical damage is massive - you can KO a target with one perfect dash attack>vid related>>737792876how did you know my name??>>737793606thanks anon
>>737795130I don't remember why the nun had a school bus, but I remember she was hot as fuck. Also the fun fact that the original art for Minion in TMB was just Pyro from Rogue Trip.
Im just gonna dump my ideas here for the TW game that will never be>Online battle royale>Offline stages where you fights bosses to progress a character's story >Base machinegun does significantly more damage so keeping enemies off your tail actually matters>Vehicles get big medium small classification>Bigger vehicles are slower but immune to ram damage of smaller vehicles>Bigger vehicles has more weapon slots than smaller vehicles( you cannot just hoard 500 homing missiles)>Significantly more weapon options and tiers>Options to upgrade your car during a match>Huge fucking ramps and environtment that can damage you if youre not careful>NO off vehicle combat (can you believe they thought its a good idea?)
Fumes is cool
>>737790619I think Vigilante 8 is the peak. The cars, pilots, story and enviroments are perfect.
>dude what if we made a car game where you can never see where you're going?
>>737798609>Vehicles get big medium small classification>Bigger vehicles are slower but immune to ram damage of smaller vehiclesTMB already does this sort of (other entries might as well) iirc manslaughter is the largest player vehicle (since Minion is shrunk when playing as him) and does considerable ram damage even without turbo, but his machine guns are mounted so wide you can shoot right over mr grimm and the sports carslook at the size of that fucking truck, jesus christ. also bigger vehicles still do fat ram damage to other big 'uns too
Lets be honest anonsyou just wish Sony would greenlight an actual TM game instead of pussyfooting around with the damn TV series
>>737799068I don't trust modern Sony or modern anyone to make a good TM.
how many layers of render to texture can the PS2 handle, boss?>idk bro just let it go on forever
>>737790619Because it's pretty hard to do anything with it. At its core, they're just more AFPS deathmatch, which usually doesn't lend well to single player content, at least in a direct manner, and then you also have the difficulty of making the levels feel satisfying to navigate and shoot other players with car movement.
>>737800362>At its core, they're just more AFPS deathmatch,Everyone is too afraid to lean into letting cars drive like cars instead of Doomguy. It's worse than AFPS because people have long since figured out 'moving' and 'aiming' at the same time, but in these games you're still stuck with 'stand in one spot and rotate around' half the time because you can't aim shit other than right in front of you.
Mad Max 2015 has a lot of vehicular combat.
>>737791275>picrelThe cross is very close indeed.
>>737791636>google please tell this retard
>>737790619You had a new Carmageddon recently and Fumes is about to be the best one ever.

>>737790619>Which one was your favorite? It's hard to pick between Vigilante 8 and Twisted Metal: Black. I might prefer Vigilante 8 slightly just because Minion is so obnoxious to face in TM:B.
All I want is Twisted Metal Black 2: Harbor City but it's too late for that now.
>>737790619Twisted Metal 2, but Vigilante 8 2nd Offense is a close second. FUMES looks neat. Keeping an eye on Crash and Conquer too.
>Why did they dieCannot put Fortnite control scheme into it.
I think mostly people are afraid of engaging GTA on it's home turf. There's that one WEIRD fucking game from the makers of Rain world of all people.>>737792487This man needs a CAR named after him.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qAkCTO5hUJ8>>737791439>>737791402>>737791636Technically Battlezone and Red barron are FPS vehicular combat. >>737791794Maybe they should give a few billion to Bungie instead.

>>737795812Part of the tradition of mobile ministry busses, also religious school busses, and cults that drove around in busses.
I still don't get why, during the entire battle royale craze nobody made a single car combat game for it when the FFA is essentially the same thing just at a smaller scaleMake a twisted metal game, stuff 24-50 players into one giant map, call it a day
>>737802194It's funny because fortnite had a car combat season at one point.
>which one was your favouriteI havent played many but I've recently played Split Second and it's an amazing video game
